We are having trouble with an Allis Chalmers 410 garden tractor with a shuttle drive.
The issue is the tractor will not pull a small hill/rise in higher ranges. The belt isn't slipping. Does anyone have any ideas of things we can investigate to resolve this issue. Thanks for your advise!

In my opinion you have something broken inside after the hydro. and after the 2 speed transmission. As in Rear differential, because for the front wheels to turn your engine, hydro, and transmission must all work, but something is seriously wrong.. I am not a mechanic so take what I say with a grain, but lets see what other more experienced folks say. But this is what I think.

You might also want to ask on Simpletactors.com. The Simpletractors website is just for lawn and garden size tractors and accessories. Lots of knowledgeable people there also.

I would start by looking for sheared keys , make sure oil level is good. It sounds like something sheared or broken that makes contact on level ground and going up hill cause it to slip on the shaft. also differential
on axle have heard of items that either break or cause slippage. Hope this makes sense , know what I'm looking at but just don't know how to explain it Just my $.02

I got a great deal on another coloured rider with same problem, drive OK level, wouldn't go uphill..
Hydro unit was almost empty of oil ! Had to remove from rider( NO drain plug),clean it,add couple of magnets(JD is cheap),then refilled with SYNTHETIC 5W30( what mfr SAID to use ! NOT the SAE30 JD had in it). Once purged it'd go up steep slopes without any problems. Hydro units need to be kept CLEAN. If not, they heat up, 'vent' oil fumes, then heat up faster(less oil), vent MORE fumes, then heat up......until they destroy themselves. If caught soon enough, it's a $30 cure other wise hundreds to repair. jay |

wait so is it a hydro or a shuttle? if its a shuttle there is some linkage under the seat that you can adjust so it engages completely when you have the lever for the shuttle forward.
