Took the cover off of the right side brake today on the D19.   The pads on the brake bands, are worn, but they are a little over an 1/8" at their thickest and just under an 1/8" in the most worn areas.    How thick are the new pads?    I did adjust both of them to the 2" free travel, and the right brake will now stop the wheel when driving but the left side doesn't.    I didn't take the cover off of the left side to check that side, it may be more worn as the right brake rod was busted and I had to weld it back up so the left side was getting all the use.
Also, I went to get a hydraulic pressure guage and some fittings to plumb one in on my power steering pump lines to see what pressure the pump was putting out but the fittings I got are incorrect, so I will have to go back tomorrow and get the right fittings.   I did take out the relief plug and look at the shims that are in it.   The IT manual that I got says to adjust the shims to make the pressure be around 1000-1250 psi.   But it doesnt' say if removing shims increases pressure or decreases pressure.   I would think you would have to add shims so there is more pressure on the springs and the relief valve to increase the pressure and removing shims would decrease pressure.   Just want to make sure I am going the right way.    I am going to get the right fittings tomorrow and hook a guage up to it in the next night or two so I will see how worn out the pump is.   Also, is there a drain on the front bolster to drain out all the old fluid?   I would like to put new fluid in there once I get this thing figured out.   I think it says automatic transmission fluid, what is everyone else using in their power steering?    Thanks for any help.

Drain plug takes 1 1/8" wrench located above the right side tie rod. Use modern day universal hydraulic fluid....takes 4 to 5 quarts. More shims makes more pressure, but I doubt it will change anything. ...something else is the problem, not the relief valve.

My manual for the D17 IV says to use type A transmission fluid for the power steering.  I used the universal hydraulic/transmission fluid from TSC in my power steering.  I checked with my local tractor mechanic guy to make sure this could be done and he indicated it was ok.  Dave

Well DrAllis, one of the lines worked it's way up and cut itself a hole on the generator pulley so when I bought the tractor, there was no fluid in the whole system.   Who knows how long the pump was running dry and what damage that did to it.   I will put a guage on it and see what it reads first before I pull it off and tear it down.   Thanks.
