 Topic: AC Model CA 3PT Hydraulic Cylinder

Hi, new member here. We just purchased a 1953 AC Model CA. There are 2 hydraulic cylinders on each side of the 3 point hitch. One of the cylinders is leaking fluid around the piston at the gland packing end. The problem is the gland packing nut is tightened down so far that there is nothing to grab onto to get it off. I am adding pictures so you can see what it looks like. How would a person go about getting this nut off? Or would you just unscrew the cylinder further down and remove the chevron gland packing from that end?

Here is the top of the cylinder. How would you get this gland packing nut off. Or is there another way to get at that chevron packing to stop the leak around the piston?

Alvin M how can you get a pipe wrench on it when it barely sticks out and you can't grab it. Also which way does this nut turn to get it out? Does it turn left or right to loosen it? Normal would be left to loosen, but we are new at this, and have never owned an AC before.

You will need a pipe wrench that the jaws are still square on the edges and sharp to grab it.

yup, buy a NEW pipe wrench !!! Use IT, NOT an old one !!!! heck, with luck you'll get the nut off AND be able to take the pipewrench back for a refund.....

If all else fails.....try something like this: drill and tap two holes for, say, 1/4" bolts in the gland nut. Locate the holes so you can slide your stoutest screw driver or a small diameter pry bar between them and the piston. Use it as a lever to turn the nut out. But first make sure that replacement nuts are available.
