I have been fixing up my dad's old New Idea 290 haybine.   Finally pulled it out to get it going and get a crop of hay off of the one field for the ponies.  Put the sickle back on after replacing all the sickles and then got everything hooked up to the tractor for a test run Friday night.   Ran for about five minutes and the drive chain for the crimpers popped off.   Dissassembled that and got it back on.  Then I hooked up a ram to the 45 diesel and the hyd. fitting on the tractor which never leaked before, leaks like a sieve with a line hooked up to it.  Robbed a newer one off of the D15 to save a trip to town and tested everything and good enough to try going to the field yesterday morning.   Had trouble getting the hitch to offset to the cutting position but got out in the field and made two rounds.  Slip clutches on the chain drive to the crimpers started to not engage.  Back to the house.   Ended up dissassembling the whole jackshaft to get the pins so they would loosen up and then found a bad bearing.   run to the bearing shop just before noon and then put everything back together.   As I'm putting it all together found a half broken link on the crimper chain, looking at the rest of it there was already three splices in a 5' chain so back to the store for a new chain and new springs for behind the pins in the slip clutches.   Decided to keep the old belts on as there was some rust on the pulleys from sitting that I didn't get off with the wire wheel, so I figured I would be better off using the old ones up first.     Got everything back together by around 3 and then back into the field.   3 more rounds and the belt to the sickle started slipping and smoked off.   Made it back to the house and had it all torn down again awaiting a trip this morning for a new belt.     I actually was happy cause I thought I got all the bugs worked out of a machine that sat outside by my dad's for 25+ years and I got for free, but then as I was picking up tools the wife said, boy you must be frustrated, you spent all day working on it and you still don't have the field cut!!  Oh well, hopefully I'll get it all finished today.

Yikes! I guess all that WOULD make for a long day. :) But your story does make a good point: you oughta feel good about getting the 290 ready to roll! Sometimes the journey is the point. Good luck next time in the field!!
