Terminal on left is marked A, terminal on right is marked F, armature and fields, what is the 3rd terminal?

Ground ! yeah,  that's what it is.
Without it , power  has to go, hopefully, from what ever nuts and bolt attach the genny to a bracket, then bolts to the block, then to a bolt for the ground wire, then to the battery. Those are a LOT of 'points' where power may not get through. 1/2 amp here, 1/4 amp there....hmm...never get full charge syndrome. Smart guys run a separate ground from genny/alt to battery  post that is ground. 'Old skool' for reliability.
