I had a broken spring on a brush arm fixed. I installed the generator (+ground) and tested voltage before starting. (12.7 v). After starting, I had 13.25 volts. I thought all was good. The next morning my battery was dead. When I put a new battery in, I heard a noise. My generator was running. This is what took my battery down. Do I have a bad switch, regulator, or do I need to polarize the system? I did a search, but did not find my answer.

sounds like your voltage regulator has the cut out relay contacts sticking or the maybe welded together, Im assuming that you have a 3 or 4 pole regulator.you can open it up with the battery unhooked and see if any of the contacts are stuck together,if not with the cover off hook the battery back up run the engine and when its charging watch the contacts in the regulator,(if not charging try to ploarize, just a touch with a jumper wire from "bat" to "gen") when you shut the engine off the cut out relay contacts should be open> the cut out relay is the one that has the "bat" on it. If there stuck together then unhook the battery and break the contacts, and run the engine again,if they stick together again after shut down then I would replace the regulator. I have had the cut out relay stick sometimes when first polarized, but usually once you unhook the battery and break the contacts they dont stick again.
sorry I hope I didnt confuse you not good at explaning things on paper.
maybe someone else can simplify it.
good luck.

Sounds like that is what's happening. I left the battery disconnected for now. I think you hit the nail on the head. I will not be able to check till next weekend. I think it is a 3 pole.
Thanks! |

Has to be the cutout sticking or welded contacts. That's the only way the generator armature gets connected to the battery, if its all wired right.
