Howdy fellas, long time no-post!
I just acquired this fine, low hours classic...but I bought it knowing of an issue. Need your much valued opinion(s)

Simplicity 7116H, with the 16 hp single cylinder Briggs. She gets up to operating temperature and at some point she dies. Just cuts right off. Cools down, she fires again. Had an old Cub that did the same thing, that was points and condenser. You think it's the same thing? ALSO, what sort of task is it on these old Briggs? The K241 was simple and on top-side, what's the low-down on this one?

Thanks!

Points on a Briggs of this style are very straight forward also. Should be located under a cover on the side of the block just forward, as pictured, of the carburator needle. I can't recall exsactly when they went to electronic ignition but sometime around or just after they went to a gear drive starter from the Starter/Generator. I can't quite make it out in your picture but I think you may have electronic ign. If this is the case the Magneto could be bad the same way as a condensor. Moister contamination will lead to steaming up of the coil and short out the winding.
I would say though you need to pull the top air shroud and inspect it for a mouse nest that can lead to over heating. You might also pull the crank case vent behind the carb. and check the valve tappet clearance. It could be heating up and loosing the clearance from a worn valve seat. This will drop the compression when hot and stall.
Yea, I can fix that.....

Welcome back Shane!

We have an orange sister to the one you have, a 916H.

Seems to like to eat deck belts, but that could be because maybe a pulley is bad, not sure. Runs good, but this one has a kohler engine in it. I think that is original.

Thanks fellas!

It does have the gear drive starter, there's a voltage regulator that sits on top of it; looks just like the 916H in the last pic. I think that is the cast-iron Briggs also. She doesn't get overly hot, and it's all clear in the cooling fins.  I'm leaning toward the mag breaking down due to heat, Steve you know how electronic stuff does funny things when heat is applied!

Thanks again fellas, I've been lurking for some time...just layin low Steve! lol

It's definately a Briggs. Allis used Kohler's, Simplicity used Briggs, same tractor. Simple to adjust the valves in the tractor. To pull the mag you must pull the engine. It's worth the effort to check the valves before pulling the engine. IMHO
Nice tractor either way. You'll like it.
