bite the bullet and remove the tank and steam it out. it only takes a couple hours to get the tank off less if you don't have a Cab. I messed with mine so many times I couldn't count on it running. there is a 10" wide section in the middle you cant get to. I removed the fuel sender and cleaned that side and the other side through the filler hole. in a dad or two more crud worked its way out from the baffled area and it plugged up again. remove the tank stand on end and steam it out. all the crud from the center section moved to the bottom end. vacuum it out  blow the tank clean with air and the vacuum stuck in there and put the tank back on the next day.

The liner kits use Muratic acid to prep the tank before lining.  I did one and was tempted to not put in the liner stuff because it looked so clean, but there was rust areas so I ended up lining it.  But it sure was clean after the acid.

Hi guys . I have another tank off my parts tractor that isn't rusty . Odd it has been sitting for over 35 years . but it isn't rusty. Just kind of dirty old fuel and a little crud. But no rust. The one on the tractor is unreal. There is sediment at the bottom that when you put a stick in it . it looks like brown anti seize . and above the fuel line it is rusty . I don't get why it did that . It sat for 2 years . It had a bad injection pump that I changed with one I went through and put seals in it . put it on and got it running . I changed the pump, the I injectors, and the manifold and turbo . It sounded Great then it died. Checked the bowls and they were full of crap. They were clean when I changed the pump . So I'm swapping tanks . the old one is almost off now . The one on the tractor had a leak some where along the seam in side the cab it would get wet if you filled the tank up . I got a gas 190 that the tank is rusty . The cap got taken off it and some one sucked the gas out of it and it got a bunch of water in it when it poured . One or 4" rainstorms and sat for a while till I was going to use it and found out what went on . Now it so rusty that it has to come off and get changed . I got 3 190xt'diesels soon to be 4 and 1 190xt gas . The neighbor traded me hay for his 190xt . It has sat for 2 years and when he try to get it going a couple of weeks ago it ran and died and ran and died . So I'm betting the tank is full of crusty fuel. I had pump fuel in mine and it stinks so bad its unreal and I now that's what he used so I'm thinking its the same thing going on with it too . I have never smelled fuel so stinky as the stuff in my tractor. Ive had off road fuel that has sat for a few years and never smelled like this. Thanks Roger in Grantsburg Wisconsin.
