What don't make sense is we only get 4% of our oil from Russia. How can 4% make the prices go up as much as it is?

So here is a new twist  being reported in some news outlets.

According to some industry insiders, when Wipe Me took over, there was an immediate change in banking rules. Fed Reserve and DOJ immediately put a squeeze on lenders to completely shut down the oil and gas industry. Can't get credit or financing for new wells, fracking or any such thing. They go after banks that violate that order.  While on the road yesterday, heard a replay of Wipe Me during campaign prior to election. In his own words, he is doing exactly what he said he would do. Shut down the US Energy sector.

Explains why prices have been climbing steady since Nov 3rd, 2020. Gas here that day was $1.75. It stands at $3.99 as of today.

Meanwhile, ALL the farmers I've known ARE 'businessmen' They KNOW the math but are faced with far more challenges that the others don't have. Long hours, sick animals, rain (or no rain),obscene fuel costs, broken machines on Sunday, .. yet at the end of the season you hope to at least break even, maybe make a small profit, then plan to do it all over again next year

Well, I don't know what how you would call it but I grew up on a farm.  When I left home for college I had 5 cows and a Chevy pickup.  My dad was tired of feeding my cows so somehow I managed to rent 300 acres of grass and buy 25 more cows while I was in college, I did get a couple years of school paid for on a football scholarship so that helped.  Last two years I worked in a repair shop for a farmer who became sick and one year after I got out of school he died.  His wife and sister in law rented me their ground (3 quarters plus 2 that was family a lot of irrigation)  I bought equipment and the following year rented another 13 quarters, spent a lot of nights sleeping over a steering wheel and about 6 years later got rid of that damn old Chevy pickup that had 490,000 miles on 400 pontiac engine, she was getting a little rough, but still would break the motor mounts.LOL  The first two years I raised corn my dad did pick it for me as I didn't have a cornhead yet, and he once gave me 50 bales, other than that every piece of land, equipment, livestock or anything I have I paid for with the business.  It's a great feeling when you can do what you want and everyone else can kiss your azz.  I won't never complain I've made a comfortable living and pretty much have bought whatever I wanted, after several years of building, within reason.  Sure I bich just like any farmer but there is almost always money to be made, if your diversified.  For me that means corn, milo, soybeans, wheat, cow calf, feeder cattle.  Does that mean you can't go broke, of course not, but it's the same for any business.  Now if you want to buy all new equipment and every piece of land you farm, you're going to go broke, but a business man would know not to do that. Wink

Another thing, a lot of business men will buy farmland for investments and rent it on shares.  I farm for a man that grew up here and believe it or not has a CPA and is a attorney, and one of his clients is AGCO, and he still buys land however I farm his families ground and he buys land in eastern KS because he said he owned enough land in the dry hellhole where I farm.LOL  He's a great guy and one of the smartest people you'll ever talk too.  My accountant also owns his farm, equipment land and all, but in his case he has God on his side, he's a ND grad and his papa was the Grand Pooba of the KofC.  I get my moneys worth when I see him out of all those Tootsie Rolls I eat.Wink

As far as my degree, it came in the mail, don't know where I put it, and I still have nightmares about the business law professor.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.Wink
Boy, just breaking even........LOL

Hell I can get up late and not worry about power going off for 300 head, although if I did I bet my banker would get worried.LOL

Oh, and buy the way Oliver couldn't even make enough to put a roof on his house so he wasn't much of a business man.LOL

thanks for your story !
you're a farmer first ! You got your real education there. I still want to know where you put the 5 cows while in the college, did they graze in the courtyards on campus ??

A businessman  buying a farmland as investment(on paper) isn't what I was thinking, he never gets his hands dirty, can get up late, not worry about power going off with 300 head more than ready to be milked. I was trying to say a 'suit' trading in his day job for actual  farm life( think Green Acres ...)

I think the one saving grace this year will be the higher commodity prices.  Of course with all the input prices up, the profit margin will probably be the same if not smaller.  Those of us who direct market should be better off as most of what I grow goes directly to the consumer, either fruit, or grain, which I grind and sell as flour.  My biggest crop, hay, almost goes direct to the consumer, just got to figure out how to get the horse and other livestock growers to give me their CC number...
It's going to be a trying year for us but still a whole lot better then those poor folk in Ukraine.

2+2=4=3+1.  Arrange it however you want the meaning doesn't change.

See.....you were doing OK, but you still had to get that last sentence in there.

It's very true, we do it because we love it.  We do dangerous stuff, in terrible conditions, for very long hours, for sometimes lousy pay, yes, because we love it and it is a calling.

But, you have to BE, or LEARN TO, or CONSULT WITH a businessman, or you will be another has been farmer crying in his coffee in town every morning how he just couldn't keep it going.  You CAN'T do it JUST because you love it, you HAVE TO make it pay, or you will be relegated to an old tractor in a parade.  Not that that's all bad, it's not, but you must treat your farm as a business.  As a group, we hang on longer and try harder through tough times longer than most, granted.  BUT, unless you're playing with unlimited family money, the bank will come calling for their money, and if all you're doing is losing it, you're done.

Yeah, you had to get bigger to keep going, and there's a lot of hard feelings on that.  I've lived and am living it.  It's where capitalism meets farming, it ain't always pleasant.

I suspect most farmers will shrug their shoulders, buy the 'input costs', plant and carry on farming..It's in their blood, plain and simple. Now if they were true 'businessmen', they'd 'run the numbers', see 'red' at the bottom of the paper and NOT farm.

Not saying anything about this  is good but what  does a farmer do. Been there done that, you buy fuel to put seed in the ground. Thankfully no need to burn much fuel as hay crop is on the doorstep of a crop failure without rain real soon. The cows don't burn gas (just manufacture it like Shameless LOL) and other than hauling them to auction. I just got in under the wire with a bit of gas and diesel in the tanks to do that.

In a  shortage of oil products 30 years ago all the farm fuel suppliers in this area went from 30 days to pay to 10. As the amount of dollars had doubled without any increase in profit for a distributor. Thankfully I have no idea of what farm operating loan is costing today , my guess is no more than 20 years ago. Not like the 80's when it got to the high teens.  Good luck to those of you planning on planting a crop this year.
