HELLO
ANYONE IN HERE EVER CONVERTED A R-12 SYSTEM ON A 70 SERIES TO 134A ? IF SO DID YOU CHANGE THE EXPANSION VALVE ? IF VALVE WAS CHANGED ANY SOURCE AND PART # WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL, ANY OTHER TIPS WOULD BE VERY APPRECIATED . |

No, you don't need to replace the expansion valve. Actually, there are now some reasonably priced replacement alternatives for R-12, rather than converting to 134

The drop in replacements for r-12 a very reasonable compared to market price for 134a now. With the conversion the charge quantity is different and the valve ports need to be change. Other than that not a big deal.

I have a can of freeze 12 sitting on the shelf. Let me know if someone needs it. I would have to lookup a fair price.

We could get it wholesale, but I was told it was stopping production so I bought what I could. The 1 can is all I have left.
I should also mention, I can get very reasonable prices on tractor AC parts.

put 134 in it with a oil additive to make the mineral oil compatible and donnt look back. Some of the blends leak one blend more than the other and can't be toped off . So if you have a miniscule leak every season youll have to put a full charge in instead of a oz or 2 .

Where can you buy the mineral oil additive? Is it a Brand name or what is called? Thanks!

The automotive parts stores like oriely or autozone in this area have it. It comes in a black tube you screw it onto the schrader valve fitting then turn a nut with a socket on the back to compress the additive into the system. I think its PAG oil from memory but not a 100 percent certain just ask a good parts guy with the info I posted and he should be able to get you hooked up with it.

actually, I've evacuated and recharged several systems w/R-134 and nothing else, and so far, have never had a problem. Mitch does bring up a point, though, systems designed to run w/R-12 will quite possibly require occasional top offs as the R-134 molecule is much smaller than the R-12 and will sneak out of places that the R-12 couldn't

I need to clarify that a little refrigerant blends will need the whole charge put in everytime with a leaky system . single component refrigerants like 12 and 134 can be topped off by adding a oz or 2 . if thats all that has leaked out. Blends not the case. heres what i was meaning according to Technical Chemical freeze 12 is 80 percent R134A and 20 percent hcfc-124B so when it leaks out is whats left the 80 percent 134 or the 20 percent r-124b who knows.

PAG oil is what all automotive systems run except for hybrids. PAG can cause a loss of isolation so POE is used. I've converted many 12 systems to 134 with only new valves and evac and recharge. In most cases 80% of the R12 capacity is what R134 charge ends up being.
