My little brother and I bought this R5 from a neighbor who upgraded to an R75. We thought we really had something when we switched from ear corn and got our late K with aftermarket hydro a few years ago, and this is a heck of an upgrade!! The previous owner took meticulous care of it and it has been completely Hyperized. It's a little over kill for our 50 acres of corn and 16 acres of beans but the price was right, plus we already have a few custom jobs for it. Any hints, tips, or tricks to these rotary combines would be helpful.

Sure wouldn't take me long on the 5.5 acres I have left! That looks like a very nice machine, and will last you forever!!

Bolivarboy that IHC is just like the one I had down to the colors. It worked fine with a 300+ DMI center dump behind it going to town. It kept my 78 LII busy. I wish I still had it and the machine. But an LII would be a little overkill on 5.5 acres of crop, course it wouldn't take me allll day!

We knocked out a 6 acre field in about 2 1/2 hours on Sunday, you can cover a lot of ground with a six row head at 4 mph, and the combine could have handled a lot more, with it being hyperized the 100 bu./ac. drought corn didn't even phase it. That is 1 of two old IH grain trucks we have, they are good old trucks! Neither one of them has much of a hitch on them, so we don't pull a wagon, but 300 bushel in the box is plenty of a load on them and we only have to haul it 8 miles.

running at full tilt, you might need to find another IH and have Triplets.
The single number R series were unique machines, one year only, and had the beefy unloading system and bigger engine compartment, and better residue management, but still got the ol Allis engines. the 5 should last a long time, the 6 was rapped a little tight and would come apart on occasion. be careful on those finals, those are the standard duty. we have 2 good ones left, and our salvage yard buddy is cleaned out. keep the oil full, and put magnetic plugs in so you can monitor filings. worse case, you can bolt on the bigger finals, but will need different rims. with a 6 row, you should be fine though. good luck!

Bolivarboy, I farmed 300 or so acres 10 miles north of me and it was a mile from the elevator cross the field. Unfortunately it was 2.5 miles by road. They couldn't dry as fast as they got corn in and would shut down at noon, and somedays wouldn't open up. I would hook the 2 385 Kilbros wagons that I pulled with my FWD chevy p/u behind the 1600 IHC w 345 and haul to the town south of my house. It was about 15 miles farm to elevator, and at 25-30 mph tops, and that on blacktop only it took a lot of time. But it was a way to keep the snouts of that LII in the corn, and I just could NOT sit idle. I could carry right around a thousand bushels(give or take) on each trip. Poor people poor ways thingy! Right?

And yes Bolivarboy, I like FOMOCO also. Currently driving a 2000 Explorer and love it! My wife totalled out a 2004 Gtp two weeks ago last wednesday, and fixed it. It was starting to develope rattles, and had brown gunk in the radiator(maybe trans fluid), had sensers in the wheels for the traction control which made me always putting air in to keep the lite off. And the day before the wreck I looked at the milage and it said 86467. I'm just not a fan of gubbermint motors anymore!

Very nice looking machine and beautiful country picture.
I was visiting my cousin in NE Ohio last month and we drove by two new JD combines, a big 8300 something tractor and 800 bu. grain buggy in a 62 acre bean field. He said "there's $800,000 worth of green in that field." Quite impressive but wouldn't want to have to make the payments even if they were silver and orange. |

If it has the full "hyper" treatment it will be fine. Should handle 250 bpa corn at 2.8-3 mph

It came with the 6 row head that is in the picture and we also have a 4 row wide head available, just waiting to buy it until we have a job for it. I will take more pictures of it when I go home this weekend, hopefully we will get the beans off this weekend, they were awful green yet last weekend.
