I am debating weather to make a trip to Mondovi WI to pick up this pulling tractor (Yes D 21). I have a load to pick up in central MT for a guy on the way back to pay for some fuel. It is 1874 miles one way for me. I am thinking of putting my late dads old Dodge Brothers coupe and sedan in the MN and WI and ND craigslist to see if I can drum up anything.
Questions, I drive a Dodge 1 ton with singles and have a 26 ft 3 axle gooseneck. I am thinking of pulling off the front 2 tires so it does not look to heavy of a trailor. I am going to be light both ways anyways. I should not have to stop at any scales or what is it in some of these states? I would leave on a Wedsday afterwork and get back Mon night for a board meeting for the GOTO on the 24th. Anyone need a Dodge Brothers 27 coupe or a 28 standard 6 4 door sedan? Or anything along I 90 fro WA to MN or WI. Let me know what I might run into. Thanks Darryl Krause Lynden WA. 360 393 7760 cell

I don't know how those scales operate, I'm usually on back roads when I haul anything but the signs in MN say anyone over 10,000 lbs gvw has to stop and WI is 8,000 lbs.. I've never taken 90 so I'm not sure where the scales are, I know 94 has them on both ends of the state.

From what I hear, sometimes you will just get sent along your merry way with no problem. Other times they will treat you like an over the road trucker. Depends on the mood of the DOT person on duty. Would you be coming through North Dakota on 94, or continuing on 90 down ward into Wyoming then accross South Dakota? Darrel

I don't think I'd mess with the trailer tires, my thinking is with tires the axle adds to the carrying capicity when you scale it. Without the tires it's just dead weight and begs the question why did you remove the tires?
That might get an officer thinking about broken springs or a blown tire... from overweight or poor maintainence? Anything that might draw unwanted attention I try to avoid. Chain stuff properly, don't leave tarps or anythin flapping in the breese, keep the truck and trailer halfway clean and the paint in good shape (not like new just not rusty, flaky, peeling, etc) and you can go a long way without getting a second look.

The D21 is between 9500 and 11000lbs.
Regardless of how you do it, you'll have a trailer that exceeds 10,000lbs, and your tow vehicle's GVW will HAVE to be over 10,000lbs, so you're automatically in Class A CDL territory. It's a nasty little 'gotcha' in DOT rules. My truck has a 16k GVW, so I can't even pull an EMPTY trailer with 10,000 or over capacity without a Class A, hence, all our company trailers are liscensed to 9980lbs. :-\ Leave ALL the tires on... you'll need them, not only to help carry the beastie, but also to help stabilize the rolling that occurs fore-aft against the tow vehicle. It will also help reduce yaw (sway) with that high center-of-gravity. Because of it's size, and the round-trip drive, you may find it more economically-feasible to hire an LTL trucking firm to put it on a flatbed on a dead-head trip west. |

The D 21 is a Super Stock rolling chassis with no engine. Weights only 4250 lbs. Pulled in the 6200 SS Class. I am liscenced for 32000 lbs(For the last 7 years). I do carry a log book(In case I drive for a friend of mine) I have a class A CDL and a med card. IF I do get pulled over, I feel I am covered and I can play dumb if I am needed to. Thanks Darryl

Where many now get hung up id the tow vehicle also needs a current inspection sticker, as well as the trailer. With the 10,001 the full unit becomes a Commercial class unit. Being under the 24 or 27 total GVW drops it into Class B lic. then trailer over the 10,001 brings it back into A. Either way the inspection of power unit and trailer is needed.
US HI-10 from Mondovi to US HI-61 to I-94 will get you past any weigh scales until you get to ND port of entry in Fargo ND on I-94. MN has a incoming scale on I-94 there though. On I-90 in MN there is a scale by Worthington MN and also on I-90 a scale in SD at Sioux Falls. Edited by Coke-in-MN - 02 Sep 2012 at 10:42am |

Sounds to me like you have your bases pretty well covered. If you do hit the road and need to take a break somewhere near Hebron ND (about 60 miles west of Bismarck, 40 east of Dickinson), let me know. I could meet up with you for lunch or something. Darrel

Nahh, Ted... you know where I WAS... ;-) but Darryl knows where I am... he calls me about every 3-5 minutes and asks me if I'm there yet...
(I think he learned that trick from his kids...) Gets lots of looks... and lots of questions. Had a guy ask me how fast it'd go... I told him I had it up to 79 mph earlier this morning, and he said "REALLY?"... Uh, yeah... speed limit on this highway is 75, and the truck is governed at 79... and there's a long downhill back there about ten mile... Took him a moment to figure out that it was on the trailer at the time... (yeah, I drive tractors without engines and rear tires all the time...) ![]() ![]() Edited by DaveKamp - 08 Sep 2012 at 12:33am |

Guy driving an empty stock trailer asked me "How many horsepower's that got?"
I told him "Right now, exactly same as what your trailer's got"... He said "Don't have no horses in my trailer"... I said "No horses under this hood neither, so we're even!" "Oh..." "So... when it's all set up, what'll it pull??" Oh, about anything that has a chain hangin' off it... usually a pullin' sled, but I reckon it'll pull a Farmall, or a JD... or a really, really strong plow... obviously a Dodge or Ford... probably a mammoth's tooth... but always an awesome wheelie... (am I a smartass, or what?) |

Well, I hope you make the trip with no problems! You should be about half way out there by now. Hope you stopped for the night. Don't need anyone falling asleep on the road just to make Darryl happy. LOL Is he gonna let you drive it when he gets it all fixed up? Looks good!! I saw it sitting up there in Mondovi. Have a safe trip and God Bless.

Eldon weren't you saying how good the vegetable stand was doing and you should find another tractor, a pulling tractor should eat up the vegetable profit quickly.

Well, Ted, I guess I should'a asked him first, but I decided to just put my truck on the trailer, yank the duals, slap 'em on this bugger, and drive the tractor, with the FORD in tow behind. Sure climbs hills better, and I don't hafta worry 'bout shifting gears!!! ![]() |
