    Posted: 21 Jul 2012 at 11:11pm
Hi Guy's, New to your forum and need your help already! Just bought my first Allis. I bought it as a 1949 wd.  I was pretty positive it wasn't a 49 ( I could see 50 and 51 dates), but to further confuse the situation, I went to pick up a loader for it today and the fellow had 6-7 wd's and wd-45's and 60 years of knowledge about them. While looking around at his piles of treasure's I started to wonder about the exact model I had purchased. The serial # on the rear end is WD47054 but the engine doesn't have the large plate on the side of the block like his WD's . Mine also has a distributor whereas his WD's were all mag's. His WD-45's looked like the exact engine, had a distributor.  How can I tell what I have? The only part I got for it so far was a starter drive which should be interchangeable...

Any help in deciphering this conundrum would be great!

WD  with an engine change.  The  45's had a gear shifter that was curved.

the curved shifter is not 100% proof.
This DOES have the straight shifter, and looks like it has the shorter head, so best guess is that this is a WD.
Get the serial number and google it online, and that will tell you for sure.

Now, looking at the oil filter canister, this also looks like it has the Leroi engine in it.
Its a little bit different than the Allis engine.

Good Luck.

You have a WD with a 201 Leroy engine in it.
3 WD45's with power steering,G,D15 fork lift,D19, W-Speed Patrol, "A" Gleaner with a 330 corn head,"66" combine,roto-baler, and lots of Snap Coupler implements to make them work for their keep.

Don, what gives it away as a LeRoi engine? There is a pair of them in some Bantom draglines at my local salvage yard. They look like AC's to me.

Two of the things that tell me Leroy are the canister oil filter  and the timing cover.
This tractor has a WD45 gov and dist in it too.

Don't mean to sound like the correct police, but that loader frame is mounted about a foot too far forward.  No big deal unless you are lifting real heavy stuff or have short arms as you'll have a hard time reaching the trip lever.  Also, if thats the stock oil pressure gauge location, it's darn near worthless.  Would that engine have originally been on a power unit?

The Leroi engines have that canister oil filter, and alot of them don't have a thermostat, or even the location for a thermostat. The water manifold is just a straight shot up to the radiator hose.
There are also no markings on the block like the AC blocks have.

I had one in a WD45, and was NOT impressed with it. It had no power.
It was a 201 with the shorter head, and it did not do well on the dyno.

WD47054 is a 1949 WD, the straight shifter is always a WD. It also has had an engine swap and combine wheels put on it.

Leroi engine?  Never heard of such a thing.  When did A-C use them, for how long and what models?  Also noticed the rain cover on the exhaust is the opposite of mine.  Never noticed one installed like that.  Anyway, interesting pictures and post.  Going orange is going great!

1. AC never used the engine in their tractors. As mentioned before, this tractor has had an engine swap.
2. The rain flap won't catch on low hanging tree branches this way. And if you drive into a rain real fast it won't flood the engine through the exhaustLOL

Like CTucker said, that is how I was taught to put a rain cap on. Put one on backwards and a tree branch will bend or break it, put it on the right way and a tree branch just closes it till you're past it.

I went this last weekend and picked up a loaderforr it. It took less than 2 minutes to figure out the frame was way to far forward! The mount that's on it has been butchered in the front mounting plate area. The loader came as a complete assm. but I didn't put the new mount on yet. Didn't know which holes in the frame were the correct ones. Oh ya and the way it's cobbled on it would have taken all day just to knock the welds off!

That loader frame should bolt on with no welding if done properly.

Do you know serial # location for A-C and leroy engines? There is about 3/16" of paint on everything and a bugger to find any numbers.. Still waiting to buy a manual until I find out what it is.

Thanks

Allis sold cast blocks to LeRoi. LeRoi then added other components such as head, covers, oil filter etc. At least that's the way I understand it. I have also seen the 6 cylinder version of this engine in an air compressor with two of the cylinders used as the pump for the compressor.

You will more than likely need a manual for the tractor no matter what engine it has. You won't find a manual for a WD45 with a 201cu in Leroi engine. The 45 engine was 226 cu in also

Mostly what I need are fluid spec's. type and amount, I'm looking online for some info on the Leroi now. What was the displacement on the 30 h.p. WD engine?

201, 4" bore and 4" stroke. The 45 just added  a half inch to the stroke.

Your favorite multi weight engine oil; a universal transdraulic or Hytran fluid for the hydraulics and tranny, differential; and 80-90 gear lube in the final drives is what I have used for 30+ years in my WD45.

Pretty much as I expected with the fluids. What type of fluid is used in the Governor? I don't recall ever dealing with anything like that...on anything!  I just ordered a manual for the WD, should include any specs I might need. Thanks a bunch you guy's, you've been a big help! All I need now is some wheels and tires and some fresh paint!

If i told you what I've got into it you wouldn't believe me.....

Thanks for the info.  Do you know the stock size tires? I really despise the look of whats on it and more imortantly, It's a bugger to load on a trailer ( not very practical either)!

I  really want to thank you guy's for the quick information, I've only had it a couple weeks and can see already why they have such a devote following.

14.9-28 would be what most had. The tractor came with 4 rail power shift wheels. The rims and wheels on it now are most likely 26 inch combine wheels and don't allow for adjustments.

14.9-24's are whats on it now, sure would be handy to find a pair of power shift wheels and hubs that would use the same tires!
