Grandpa had a neighbor who pulled a 5 bottom with a 190 that had a solid spike bar on it, anybody ever seen this? what was its purpose? to eliminate the need for harrowing or disking?

I have seen pictures of it.  Looked like it did an OK job.  I have also seen a cultipacker pulled behind a plow.  They had better soil than I do though.

Our neighbor used to do this and he would plant right after he plowed, no disking or harrowing.

Was still done in the Dakotas that way up to about 15 years ago. Spring plowing with a plow with 14 inch bottoms with the buster bar. Roll in right behind with the corn planter or drill. Some guys pulled the drill right behind the plow. The JD 750 made no-tillers out of everybody.

I have two bars of spring tooth on my disk and 3 bars of spring tooth on my field cultivator. The spring teeth on the disk cut the passes to make a fine seed bed from 3 to 2. And the spring teeth on the FC levels out the ridges it would otherwise have left.

Yep, Buster Bar.  Have one on dad's 9000 series 4-16 plow.  Does a real nice job of breaking up lumps before they can dry out and get hard.
The innovators offer what others will imitate.
