I am looking at buying a gleaner r40 and selling my F2...is the r40 a good machine?  It has the deutz 6cyl engine...how is the proccessor on these?  I know the N series had their issues...were they good on fuel?

The R40 is a good combine and can be found cheap. My Grandpa traded a F2 and 7030 for one when they first came out he only ran a 4 row wide corn head and 15 grain head but it will handle a 6 row head with no problem. The Deutz motors are good on fuel . The only problem we had is that you have to step down into the cab or you will hit our head.

Make sure you blow out the cooling fins on the engine everyday. They are very good engines, lots of torque and easy on fuel.

Ran a R50 with the 6 cyl Deutz and it was very econimical on fuel. 20' grain head and 6 row corn head. Keep an eye on the valve cover pods, gaskets can start leaking and the bean fuzz will stick to the film creating a hot spot. Engine head temp alarm should sound, warning you of eminant failure. Also as the cylinder and helical bars wore it would create more of a load on the threshing system causing the engine to work harder and setting off the head temp alarm. Still great combine and much improved over the N series. Watch you noggin  that low riding cab left a door way fit for midgets. The 50 i ran ended up being replaced by a 52 that had a cummins in it. The cab was sooooooooooo much better on the 52 as well as torque rise on the engine, but the fuel consumption from what i could tell doubled. Still hard for the competitors to beat the grain sample from the galvanized cob crusher!!
