Does anyone have the test data on the 7080 test model with the Cat V8?

Yeah as far as I know it was the 555 cummins V8, same as used in the 440. Larry that used to run the proving grounds said it was like sitting behind 3 tree trunks while driving it.

The performance of a non-turbo 555 cubic inch V8 Cummins could not match a 426 AC turbo-intercooled engine.....that's why they never used it in production.

I think AC was lucky that they didn't end up using it. Darrel

There was never a factory installed V8 in a 7080 nor have I ever heard of a V8 test tractor. However, I wasn't at AC when the 7000's were designed and put into production.
The 555 Cummins was used in the 440 to differentiate it from the comparable Steiger 4WD that had the Cat V8. Edited by 427435 - 09 Jan 2012 at 10:06am |

The 440 we have works right with the 7580 we have The 7580 is running 202 hp on the dyno. both fun to run. Not sure if they actually made more than just a test model of the 555 in the 7080. andy

Saw it at the W Allis plant running on dyno in '76 at the shop across from the cafeteria. Ask about it and was told they had several engines and used them for chasis testing. From the 440 days left overs said it was a cost issue as they had the 555 's and they couldn't sell them so used them for test running units as better to use than throw away or sell cheaper than Harvey plant would sell power units to the tractor division. In house bickering is always an issue. Was also told with a wink "who knows what engine will go in orange tractors someday". Of course also was aware that at the 'end time' of AC Harvey that they were about to come out with cam driven injectors with the possibility of elelctical control as well. All companies run 'engineering exercises' when the have or as long as they have the dough. |
