I have the WD engine bell housing off. I am wanting to remove the belt pulley gear. I see the snap ring does not have tab holes like modern snap rings. Is there a proper way to remove the snap ring? I have a picture that I can try to upload if needed.

There are a few types, a picture would help. But without it I would say a couple flat screwdirvers, preferrably ones that aren't your favorites, and a few bad words and a little time. Seriously there are a few differant type of snap ring pliers that I could be but will need to see what type to help.

I'm sorry, looks like I over-sized the picture. This is only 500kb. The dust is where I hammered on pine wood blocks to drive the bell housing off.

That type of ring is called a lock ring as opposed to a snap ring. You need a set of pliers like the first one shown in this link. It's the best picture I could find, but these are readily available at Sears, auto parts stores, etc.

I have 5 differant pliers in size with the flat ends for rings like these.

I have collected many types of snap ring pliers over the years. I really like the "ratcheting" type that holds its position while removing the ring.
As said, the flat tip type is designed for this style snap ring.
Having said that, this type of snap ring is a "breeze" to get off with just a pair of screwdrivers, especially in this type of application!

I got the snap ring off! Does the gear just lide off? I assume there is a key, but I've gently but firmly pried but it has not budged. If I need a special tool, does anyone have a picture link?
