My brother was cleaning out a fence row for the farmer he works for.This is what they drug out.My brother knew I would want it so they called the owner of the land(who did not know anything about it)and he said for 50 bucks I could have it.My brother used their loader and loaded it on a wagon and brought it over and unloaded it at my place this evening(Good thing I bought extra hats at Dale's show).Tires are in bad shape and side metal is a little rough.Good thing it appears the gearbox is OK.I have a line on some tires like these and my brother said he could patch the metal with his tig welder.
Looks to be a newer model 172.Similiar to the older style 172 that I already have.No numbers or tags
Mike sky high baloon,I believe this is the same model you have.We had one just like this on our farm when I was a kid.

I also have one without the chain deflectors. This is something that I would like to find. If anyone has a mower with a bad gear box, I would like to buy the chain deflectors. Dave.

Pat - nice! I'd love to have those optional front chains! You are missing the PTO shield from the pivot joint back. I have regular tires on mine and already I'm tired of them going flat, lol! Mike

The problem areas are leaking bottom seal in the gearbox, due to material wrapping and sticking/worn plungers/bosses in the overrunning mechanism. Last I checked the blades were still available. Nice find!!

I have a 3-point version of that unit and they are tough. The mounting holes front and back are where they simply added the brackets to make them a 3-pt. with adjustable tail wheel assembly. I use mine on a D15II and it will take down trees 3" in diameter with no problems. Even used it to break in the motor on the D12 by cutting with the 3-pt. arms used for front draft only in grass 4-5' tall. I changed the front seal in the gear box and run a combination of gear oil, strained motor oils and oil "honey" and it was the best 350.00 I ever spent. Heavy and thick blades that will really do some work when you get her wound up and she will make the gov'nr on my 15 bark in real heavy pastures.
With the small area for rear discharge, they will almost leave a windrow on the right side of the cutter when you get in heavy material. Check the retainer nut does not come loose on the front shaft out of the gear box (you need to remove the gaurd to check this and grease the uni joint anyway) and do not run the dampener spring made all the way up on the adjustment. PM me if you want a copy of the manual that came with mine.

Correction; yours does not have the gaurd installed and the nut I am referring to is for the yoke on the shaft, between the gear box and the slip clutch assy.

great find, i have a old trail type woods 6 footer the left side is plum gone, the right side has maybe 15% of the metal left and it works great, actually with the left side gone it cuts and throws all the trash to the left and i have baled behind it before and it does as good as a 6" cycle mower
the one you have looks like a new one next to my old woods

the chains really do the job. mine has chains on the front and back. came from the dealer that way. looks like the mower would pivot better with the wheels forward. mine has the wheels trailing behind. mow closer to fences that way. manual says finish mower wheels back, bush hog wheels forward....lucky my father in law had original owners manual for the mower and the D19.

Nice find. My brother picked up the 2 wheel 6' trail model last fall. It is in pretty good shape with chains and all. Works really good and as said before, it will take small trees. Believe it will be worth the tlc.
