Topic: Did AC Outsource Tractor Mods?Posted: 11 May 2011 at 10:00pm |

I know car and truck manufacturers have for years outsourced mods to their vehicles, from convertibles with cars, van conversions, truck van body additions, etc. I know there were manufacturers like Thompson that modified AC tractors, aftermarket parts that were made for AC tractors, and dealer modifications made to AC tractors. Were there any tractor modifications that AC had outsourced by another company before selling the completed tractor through it's AC dealer chain?

I don't think they sold them directly to dealers with the modifications. However, we always got literature from Thompson or Drott whereby they took Allis Chalmers basic tractors and "modified" them for special use. We also along with other dealers "modified" the G or other tractors for many uses in the local market.
Also, there were a lot of after market things to add on such as foot brakes for a WC, or a live hyd for a WD. Good Luck! Bill Long

In the 70's and 80's, we would sometimes work with an aftermarket vendor (Mud-Hog was an example) to facilitate their product being used on one of our tractors. It was up to the dealer/customer, however, to deal with Mud-Hog and get the modification put on their tractor.

Some investigation I did suggested that the initial run of IB's (with B serial numbers) were actually modified by Frank G. Hough Company and then shipped back to Allis Chalmers.

Seems AC had a history of if the modifications done by outside companies worked well they ended up buying the company . In construction the early backhoes and tractomotive loaders comes to mind.
