Wasn't there an old wise tell about using pepper to seal leaky head gaskets? If so how much should you use. Have a friend that is a tight *** that won't spend the money on his John Deere 4010 and trying to help him out.

We used to use pepper to seal up radiators FOR A SHORT TIME, so we could get a little extended time before pulling it to really fix the leak, I cannot see it sealing a leaking head gasket as they are under considerable more pressure and the engine vibrations keeping it moving about.

Buy the Stop-Leak stuff they sell at the Auto Store. If the leak is a seep it will work. If you are overpressureizing with the engine idling, dont waste your money. I put some in a 400 Case 15 years ago that is still holding. Used it in a 3.1 GM car that got me 60,000 more miles. It will fix small leaks but won't cure all your problems.

I have used water glass to seal up a WD that had a leaking head gasket. It seemed to work just fine. Just remember to not run it through the radiator.

We used the pepper to fix an external crack on a WD block one time, it worked amazingly well! Not sure how it would do on a head gasket that was leaking. Maybe the fellow should junk that Deere now and buy himself something good with an orange hue!

It's not an 'Old Wise Tale', its 'Wives Tale'. We only used it for the radiator and if there is ANY amount of pressure on the radiator, it will leak. Horse manure worked just as well...

I had a head gasket leak on an 83 Omni Charger with 120,000 miles on it. I put in a tube of that silver powder stop leak stuff from Auto Zone and ran it another 9 years and 100K before it started leaking again.

they have a lot better stuff in the last 4-5 years. Go to Auto Zone and buy a bottle of the liquid copper head gasket repair stuff made by BARS LEAK.. it is only $10. and works great. Mixes with the antifreeze and you leave it in the system forever.

Hmm, mechanic in a can. If it's leaking compression, I wouldn't hold my breath on it holding. I used liquid glass on my Oliver 60 to seal the sleeve O rings until I could overhaul it. Held for several years. I remember Charlie's 2.2 Chrysler and their head gaskets. All the ones I saw leaked externally. The K cars were something else...

My neighbor swears by ginger for sealing radiator leaks. put some in his 400 Farmall and old Chevy diesel pickup and sealed them up tight. I saw him put the stuff in his pickup and observed the results, works amazingly well. As far as head gaskets, if he doesn't pry open the pocketbook and just replace it he's wasting his time. I'm not a fan of pouring anything besides oil and coolant into an engine.

If it is leaking from compression, any sealer would be a waste of time. JMO MY 2.2 leaked from a water jacket to the outside and was saved, if you're blowing bubbles in the coolant, forget it.

All of the 2.2's I saw looked like a bit of the head gasket blew out and it would leak in a stream out the front of the engine over the distributor...
