Help.  On my $500 WD, I can't get the lift arms to go down.  I changed the linkage because it was pretty worn and I adjusted all of it to match my other WD, but the arms still won't go down.  I'm sure this problem has been addressed numerous times and I never paid attention because I didn't have that problem at the time.
Thanks, for the info.  Phil

Will they go down with a load on them? Mine creep up when nothing attached but I can push them back down. With a plow or other implement on they stay down and work fine. I suspect a leak in one of the pump valves or seals causes this. They should go down with the engine shut off or at least you should be able to push them down. I found the hyd lever will creep up also so when not using the hyd's I simply zip tie it down, end of problem.  There are people on here who know the hydraulics well who can probably ID the exact cause.

They never go down.  I weigh about 200 and I can stand on them with the engine off and they won't move.  I've not disconnected the hose yet.  Phil

Just loosen fitting at ram connections. You should be able to colapse by hand.If not stick a pipe over arm and try again.May have a siezed one.Don't know how it'd get that way but seems like anything is possible anymore. You could loosen the packing nut but I have trouble believing that's the problem.Good luck.

Might be a broken spring inside the pump that is caught in a valve. Happens once in a while especially after 60 plus years.

Hi guys, I'm in the same boat as Phil.  I just finished draining all the fluids in my WD and also replacing the transmission clutch.  As soon as I started the tractor the lift arms went straight up and will not come down.  With it off still no joy.  Haven't tried disconnecting the line yet.  The hydraulics would lift slowly and go down slowly when I bought it but I attributed that to low fluid level.  Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks Leonard

Screw the thumb screw on the front of the pump all the way in. They should go down.
Then screw it all the way out. Sometimes a piece of dirt will jam the valve stack.

Well, I followed the advice for Phil and disconnected the line to the right rear ram and pushed them back down.  Reconnected and started the tractor again and the same thing.  So I suspect a filthy pump internals so I removed the pump.  Pump was pretty clean inside after dis-assembly but the unloading valve assembly didn't want to move freely so I suspect that is the cause.  Will let you know when it is clean, back together and reinstalled.  Thanks for all the advice guys.

I had the same problem last year with mine. Would only go down part way even with mounted plow. Turns out I didn't put the little spring loaded ball back in when I took apart the top piece on the pump. Might be a broken or stuck spring could cause the same thing.

Update, well I completely disassembled the pump, cleaned everything thoroughly reassembled it per the manual and put it back on today, same problem.  I am at my wits end.  I need the hydraulics to work on this tractor as it is to be my sickle bar mower tractor.  Any advice is appreciated.

BTW, I did have some trouble with the unloading rod assembly sticking but I cleaned it up and was working during reassembly.  This is the only thing that I can come up with for the pump not working.

Thanks Leonard

Well, I haven't been able to figure out what's wrong.  Someone said to turn the thumb screw in all the way, and mine won't screw in.  I can get it to go about 1/8 the way in and it stops.  Phil

This may sound rather obvious but are the threads on the adjustment screw itself spoiled? The screws on mine turned really hard until I cleaned up the threads on the inside of the housing.

All threads are clean and the screws adjust easily with out the tractor running.  Once started the top adjuster is extremely tight and unable to move by fingers alone, I have to use a small set of channel lock pliers to adjust.

Make sure the linkage from the pump control linkage to the traction booster sensor at the snap coupler to attached. I once broke the bolt here snapping a chain attached to a tree. Loader wouldn't go down. Replaced the bolt, everything worked fine.

Tractor has the old pin hitch, no snap coupler.  I'm sure it is correctly back together in that respect. Thanks for the advice MBWisc.

If you have the traction booster control then you might have the drawbar control rod too tight which will cause cylinders to go up. It's the link that goes from the fork up to the pump control.

Phil, I guess we need a few more details. My WD had problems with the lift arms sticking when I got it. The tractor had been hung up on the lift arms and the snap rings in the cylinders had popped off allowing the cylinders to overextend and jam against the bottom of the axles. With the screw on the front of the pump not wanting to turn in, I would guess that you might have a broken spring jamming the valve stack. you will need to tear down the pump and get the valve freed up. Have you disconnected the hoses to the cylinders and what was the result?

I've been so busy at work, I haven't had time to work on mine.  I'm off today, so hope to be able to work on it a little.  Thanks for all the suggestions.  I'll try them!  Phil

phillb gave the same problem i had. Only thing different, the linkage part had egg shaped holes and one broke free. It's in the back part of the pump inside.

No, I never got them to go down, so I started working on another tractor I have, then I will go back to it.  When I go back to it, I'm going to pull my lift arms totally loose and see if they are binding somehow.
