i have been having trouble with the brakes on my d19 for a while now. I relined them back in 98 with A&I brake linnings. I also put in new bull pinion seals and all the return springs. Every once in a while when you step on the brake it would lock up and the only way to get it to release is to back up a little. This problem would come and go. When it got really bad i would take it apart and brake clean everything and it would work great. Last week i was using it to carry a WC in the shop and both brakes locked up without touching the pedals. It has done this about 4 times now so i now have it in the shop and took it apart. There is nothing wrong with them. there is no broken springs, or linnings. The oil seals are not leaking. The balls all measure 1 inch and there is very little wear in the grooves that they ride in. I had the rearend apart in october and the bearings on the bull pinions are good. Does anyone know what would cause this? Im thinking that the cheap china made brake linnings are getting sticky when a little bake dust gets on them. Thanks Matt

Matt...I've got two D19's that I've never had any problems with at all in regards to the brakes. The third one was fine and I never had a problem at all in seven years,until I started leaving it sit outside (I use it for logging) ,so once in a while now the brakes will lock up and you never know when. I can usually tap them lightly and they'll break free. I feel that it's from rain/snow/moisture that gets inside that causes the problem. It also has new everything on the inside of each brake assembly,so that's definitely not the problem. I know this probably doesn't answer your questions,but is just what I think is causing the problem,in case yours sits outside or you've had a lot of moisture lately. Rick

-Are the springs between the disks strong enough or did they get hot or stretched? They have to be good. And don't set your brakes up right at the top, leave the recomended pedal travel.

JC...been there,done that also. The brakes are actually a tad loose to make sure they're not too tight and everything on the inside of both brake drums are brand new...even the springs. I guarantee that moisture plays a big part with the brakes sticking or hanging up. I just learned to live with it,since they're not sticking severely! LOL! Rick

Read about this problem often Just wondered if stainless balls would help .McMaster Carr proble got balls. Just a thought never been into one.

Sounds like your balls ain't round no more. It ain't a fatal deal though you can have them removed and get some donor ones put in.

What happens is the balls roll up the ramps to far and jam, they wont roll back untill the drum turns in the opposite direction. Causes are worn linings or linings to thin, worn drum or worn inside or outside plate. Could also be a combination of wear, also always put new springs in the drums when putting in new linings-which you probably already did. I dont know if A & I linings will last long, they may be soft and wear easily, you should look at them HTH

The brakes on my 19 work great, but my dad talks of a d-19 they had back in the day, they had to grease the brake balls every now and then to keep the brakes from locking up.

Clean & dry balls/ramps are needed but how do you keep them like that?Any lube is nice to begin with but it will collect dirt and cause problems.Good strong springs probably make more difference than anything.My 220 has been prety trouble free over the years(shedded) but they are always a little weak at the beginning of a season.The more you use them the better they get.

On my 190 XT, I just relined the brakes with A&I's not more than 6 months ago, and the brakes on it are doing the exact same thing as Matt's D 19 brakes. In fact just this morning they were really pi$$ing me off several times. Some days they give me no problems though. I put all new springs in em when I relined them also. 20 years ago I relined my D19 brakes with Allis parts and haven't had an ounce of trouble with them. Don't know the deal. The 190 brakes did work awesome until just a month or so ago. Just stepped on em one morning and they growled to beat heck, and that's when the trouble started. Darrel
