Got a 9 inch South Bend lathe that i inherited from my dad 30 years ago. Gramps use to run it at the war factory in 1942... Dad rebuilt it in 1980.

15 years ago i bought an old RYERSON that was to be scrapped and rebuilt (repaired) it... 1895 vintage, 22 inch swing.. Yea its a horse and clumsy but gets you within a couple thousandths.. ( it will be retired when the 16 inch lathe is finished)

Been looking for a South Bend 16 inch short bed for quite a while. Ran accross this one on Marketplace.. Had to drive 2.5 hours to get it... 1952 model so its NEW compared to what i own. Dirty, but everything seems to be TIGHT... 3 phase 1.5 HP motor so i need to get a VDF or new single phase 1750 rpm motor..... Going to be a winter ( Jan- Feb) project... Tear down , clean, inspect, new belts, maybe bearings... and PAINT.

And the straps on the chuck shaft are not TIGHT... just keeping it from tipping over... Straps around the bed for anchor.

Ah yes, the old belt drive Southbend. We had 4 or 5 at my high school. Mr Dye loved them because if you hit chuck hard enough to break the belt all you needed was a stapler

just looked and this one has the taper cut adaptor on the back.. I never really notice that when purchase... also the leather belt is GONE... has a 2.25 inch wide rubber belt with knobs on it, turned inside out so it runs on the SMOOTH SIDE rubber..
similar to a serpentine, but cogs..

The ones with motor in the basement were called underdrives.

YEP... motor in the lower cabinet came in the late 1940s.... Before that the motor and reduction shaft were mounted OUT BACK....... Lathes from 1800- 1930 era had TOP MOUNT as they were hold overs from the old ROOF MOUNTED pulley/ shafts from the steam engine days....

This is my 1895 Ryerson with the "UPDATED" top mount beam , motor and reduction shaft.. Original was probably ROOF driven in a big factory..
