 Topic: AC 100 series dash cover?

Has anyone ever had one of the flip top dash covers that had a working closing knob? I have yet to see one. Every one of mine that is a sore spot. None work like they should. Another peeve is the battery location on the 170-175 tractors. Not as much as location, as what is involved in replacing one. Especially with a loader. Thanks, Tracy

I have never seen a flip top dash cover. I didn't know they existed. Were they original equipment or aftermarket?

170 and 175 only. As an old dealer, I've been around many and they always seemed to work for me.

Tracy, Yeah battery location is not the best. It is closer to engine starter which helps for shorter cables. I've used shorter height style battery in the 170-175s, which can allow a little more space up top for attaching/detaching battery cable terminals.

My grandfather bought this 175 in 1978 when it was a year old. I grew up on the tractor, and that latch never closed properly. Over the years, the hood and cowl had been removed numerous times - no difference. When I restored the tractor in 2015, surprise surprise, the latch actually closes now! I can't explain it and I don't know what I did.

The triangular shaped (viewed from either side) sheet metal cover that wraps over top the dash gauges & secures to the hood out front of the dash with a twist toggle. All the 100 series tractors have them(170,175,180,185,190,200,210?,220?,160s is integrated into hood??). Believe the 190s has 4 stove bolts securing theirs? I don’t know about rest.
Anyway this cover (only on the 170s?) has two studs that are located to the side of the gauge clusters & about half way down front the top of it. There’s enough spring tension inherent of the 90 degree bents of the cover which keeps the studs inserted into receptacles (welded washers? on each side of gauge cluster. So the twist toggle is the only securing piece for cover. If it doesn’t catch & hold then dash cover will be loose??

7060: only the 170 and 175 use this cowl. All the other models are bolted in place - my 185 and 190 are secured with a number of bolts.
If it isn't latched, it will not go anywhere but will vibrate against the hood, with a slight rattle coming from the wing nut latch. To answer your question, yes, the "twist toggle" is the only thing that secures the cowl to the hood. It sits on pins on either side, but the "springiness" of the cowl keeps things snug along the sides.

That latch is a POS from my perspective. It should of had a good spring under the locking pin to hold it tight. Slightest amount of wear allows it to loosen and vibrate like hell. JMHO, Tracy

Maybe this will clarify?    Looks like I need to retract my earlier statement about it not working right. It acts as it should now but there was a time when the wing bolt would not engage the slot properly

Dzus fasteners or 1/4 turn fasteners. Used in many applications. We used them a bit on race cars. Now they are available in many configurations and different names depending on who makes it!

Plummerscarin, Your missing the thin rubber washer under the cover at the fastener.
All three fasteners on my One-Seventy's and 170 still work great.
As for a cover over the gauges, In the past we use to have a heavy canvas that was wired down onto the cover which laid over the gauges and switches, when it was time to use the tractor, we just flipped the canvas over on top of the cover. Worked great till the weather deteriorated it. I need to find some more heavy canvas like we used and cover up the instrument panels again.

Didn't know about the rubber washer. I'll have to see about getting one.
As noted before, I couldn't get the thing to engage properly yet there in the photos it is fastened down. I don't remember the moment it worked. I have sprayed some chain lube in it. Surely that should help.

Could that have been an option on a 175 I don’t remember ours having one seems like it had the screws on it but that was nearly 40 years ago. I can remember the day it left my father and I were working in a field cleaning up a fence row and a fella come walking across the field and asked dad would he sell it dad said no and the fella made an offer (don’t remember the amount) and dad said yes and in a little while he came back with a check and a wad of cash and got on the tractor and drove it home about 10 miles away it also had a 500 loader on it

Not ever an option on the One-Seventy,170 or 175. Always the flip up cover to access the battery. A poor idea at best.

When I first started reading this thread, I thought they were talking about some kind of cover that folded down to actually cover the gauges (when the tractor was parked). I think some people still think that's what this thread is about.

Talking about accessing the battery, Seen where a fellow had cut the side panel open to get to the battery, then fastened hinges to it. He used one screw hole to open the 'new' door to get to the battery for removal.
I replaced the 170's battery with a group 49 battery from F&F. Height 7.5", Length 13.94", Width 6.875", Weight 52 pounds. CA 1105, CCA 900.
Only thing about this battery, the posts are harder to get at to grab the cable clamps.

Well, had a 170 with a Perkins engine - had to replace the battery - took half a day , and no turn screw hood device,, just my expierince,, have seen these on C-IH 585,S , they vibrate so much ,

We have a 72' 170 diesel we bought new. I finally learned if I take off the right side hood panel and loosen the bolts of right side of hood front and rear we can slide a battery out that right side. It only took me about 25 years to figure it out LOL!

I like the flip cove; makes it easy to access the wiring behind the instruments, fuses as well as the battery cables. I switched the hex bolts on the side cover for a couple of 5/16 adjustment screws from an office chair (not sure what the real name for them is) so that I can unscrew them without tools to access the battery and slide it out the side. I do wish they had sectioned the hood so that you could access the engine a little more easily.
