Oh! no ; Because the bell shaped retainer on the engine dip-stick of my D 17 IV was detached and lost; I had replaced it with a new one from my Agco dealer. Today a very competent experienced mechanic withdrew the dip-stick and behold! the dip-stick had broken approximately three inches below the retainer. What happened? Need we remove the engine oil pan and remove the broken pieces?

It takes quite a bit of work to remove the oil pan on a D17-IV. If it were mine, i would pop the drain plug and try fishing around with a flexible magnet first. You may get lucky enough to drag the broken piece of the dipstick out the drain hole and not have to go through all the extra work of pulling the starter, front sheet metal, front axle, radiator, front support, power steering lines, etc just to be able to remove the pan. The oil pump pickup tube has a screen and metal shield on it, so unlikely that any dipstick material would be sucked up. Give the magnetic pickup tool a try, might just get lucky. In all honesty, the remaining piece of dipstick probably wouldn’t hurt anything if left at the bottom of the pan. I would want it out of there, though, if it were my tractor.

It can't do any harm just laying in the pan. It can't get through the screen and I seriously doubt it can even get drawn up off the bottom to begin with. Not worth the effort to remove the pan in my world. If you could find it with bailing wire and a magnet, the pickup likely in the way to get it in position to get out.

If you don’t own a mechanics shirt pocket telescoping pen style magnet, maybe go buy one? Some extent 24”?
Use it to enter the dipstick tube & fish out broken dipstick that way. Chances are; the dipstick pieces may still be resting inside dipstick tube?

Good point about it still being in the tube. Will depend how long it is and if the tube ends close enough to the pan to keep it from sliding out.

Next time you change the oil, shove a cow magnet up in the drain plug hole and leave it in there laying on the bottom of the oil pan.

A Borescope inspection camera will allow you to look inside the oil pan. These cameras are great for inspecting engine cylinders and lots of other things, with minimal disassembly.

Smallest borescope I see is 5.5mm, that might work. Use of a magnet to try and pick it up, will only result in the magnet frustratingly sticking to everything else on its way in there, IMHO. If it's not still inside the dipstick tube, I'd leave it. Those cow magnets are too big to get into drain plug hole, aren't they?

You might try to apply a strong magnet to the outside of the oilpan. Once you "trap" the dipstick piece you might be able to slide the magnet over towards the drain hole, where you should be able to grab it with some needlenose or something. Might take a few tries, but I would imagine you can coax it over towards the hole that way.
