so the head that was on it was cracked beyond repair according to the shop that mag checked it. i have another head that was on my grandpa's 45 that he parted out years ago. it is cracked too, but i have not sent it anywhere to get it checked. is it ok to run a cracked head if it passes a pressure test?

What shop did you send your head too?  Dad had good luck having his 426 head welded and repaired.  I can get you the shop name.

“… is it ok to run a cracked head if it passes a pressure test?”

Yes. Most Lanova heads have small cracks in them. Older Oliver heads have them also. Very few have zero cracks!

i dropped it off at Ellis Implement in Coggon, i'll have to ask Dave where he took it. i haven't had either pressure tested yet. from reading the forum there are pretty much only two places somewhat close that will weld cylinder heads. one's up by the twin cities, the other is chapin, IL. both are the same distance from home haha. i would think between the two heads one can be saved. i'd like to keep the 230 alive if i can!

You've not said where the cracks are. Cracks between injector and seat usually not a problem because no water there. You need to get it pressure tested. Only way to know if the crack is a problem. Your head may be fine.

I think Dad used Midwest Cylinder Head from Nevada, IA.  $2k to have the 426 head welded, machined and rebuilt

i'll post pics when i get a chance, but the cracks are right where the hole for the injector is. we got rained out putting the last of the corn in today, so i should have time to get the heads pressure tested here pretty soon.
