has anyone rigged up a spring belt tensioner for the main drive belt?

no... you want the belt tighter than normal.. There is a couple LONG RUNS in the belt and a couple twists that can cause it to jump off if you get any slack... Spring would not be a good idea.
If the belt is jumping off, then the pulleys are way out of align, the belt is not tight, or the belt has a permanent bad twist in it..... take the belt off and lay on the floor... see that there is no bad TWIST and it lays flat. Edited by steve(ill) - 06 May 2023 at 8:57am |

If the belt jumps off lower the front pulley then tension as needed with the rear pulley,

I have had a loose blade cause belt to jump off my L306 before. The blade being loose made the spindle rotate slower than the others when you began to cut grass since there was no blade momentum. It wouldn't cut 5 feet before jumping off, nearly drove me crazy because I had mowed with the thing for years, couldn't figure out what was wrong.
