Whats the reason the starter kicks out prematurely? Its a Lucas starter. It wont stay engaged long enough to start the engine when its cold. As soon as the engine pops just a little the starter kicks out. I had a DR off a gleaner m setting on the shelf so I put that on and that one will stay engaged until you let off the button. Just curious what would be the likely cause.

My experience with Lucas starters is the same as yours. Pops out the first pop of the engine.

Many consider Lucas electrical parts as poorly engineered from the beginning. The only Lucas starter I have is on a small Ford diesel from the 1960's on a New Holland swather. It gave a lot of trouble until I bought a rebuilt one to replace it. The rebuilt never gave any trouble for 20 years, but a very seasonal low use machine. I have moved on and the old diesel has sat 10 to 15 years.

Well, I know many people don't like the Lucas starter, but my 200 has one and next year, it will be 50 years old and has had one "rebuild". I will say it's the best starting diesel I've ever seen for that time period. Bought a new 185 in 1972 with a Delco starter that was a hard starting tractor from day one. Sold it in 1993. It went thru 2 starters in 21 years.
