V6 FWD car, I hear from some that to get to the rear plugs and stuff is a PIA. Last story was about V6 Toyota Avalon, removing wiper motor first to get to plugs. Any comment?

The ones in my Chevy remove from UNDER the car, AFTER unbolt the Steering Rack for hand/arm clearance. Overhead is NOT gonna happen. Transverse engines SUCK.

I DO NOT work on My Impala, IN NO WAY will my hands fit where the people that designed this machine intended hands to work on things. Cheaper to pay a Small Garage than a Doc for My OWN repairs.

I've learned in the last 10+ years why my father & grandfather hated working on cars n pickups when they got 55+. It's such a pain to get up off creeper and even roller seats. I've looked at my cars engine compartment, it'll go to town for anything other than engine oil change. Still doing my pickups at shop.

Son had a 2000 Ford Taurus.. Pulled the intake manifold at 100,000 miles to change the plugs. Took about an hour.... sold it at 200,000 miles.......... Bought a 2012. Pulled the intake at 100,000 to change the plugs.. Sold it at 200,000 miles. Now has a 2018... probably do the plugs this summer........ Never did anything else on the motors... Just brakes and wheel bearings , and tires.

Back cylinders on transverse engines... I'll X2 the SUCK. Some engines, you can pull off a dogbone and mebbie a few other things, unhook a couple hoses and a harness, and 'rock' the engine forward... but they still suck. Even four cyl transverse suck, when they put things on the back that you need access to... but that doesn't necessarily make longitudinal setups 'good'... I wouldn't work on my company pickup... not only is there all kinds of crap in the way, they set the truck up so high, and have so many 'pretty covers' over stuff, that you simply cannot get TO anything, unless you're on a ladder, laying over the top of the hood. The dealer said something to the effect of "Lift the cab off"... to do some 'routine' maintenance. Not me... I'll never buy one like that...

Reminds me. The 03 Grand Am we are replacing has a serpentine belt which requires supporting the engine and remove engine mount to change the belt

was sitting at a gas station the other morning, a ferd pickup was at the pumps, the pump area is ona slant and when i looked at the truck, i could see the engine belts turning up over the front tire under the fender. seemed kinda weird, are they all open like that or did someone chop out the inner fender well for something? dunno what year the truck was

I too had to remove an intake manifold for rear plugs. Sounds worse than it is really, just set your mind to it and go. And doing them every 100,000 or so, not a big deal.

Seems not unusual to remove fender liner. Remember my brother had to do that to replace a heater motor in a 70 something Firebird. I pull the liner to replace fuel filter in my Duramax. And just recently on the other side to check a leak on power steering. Also changed plugs in a Blazer through the fenders.

Too bad, may just be my personality, but once I encounter a dumb-ass design situation, I lose respect for the machine. Then I don't like it anymore. I like working on old tractors because they are straightforward. Just having a loader frame blocking access to the distributor and I hate it. Tell me I have to drop the engine some or pull manifolds to change spark plugs and I develop ill thoughts towards the designers. Had an 1985 Mazda pickup. That was easy to work on.

you can actually just slide it back 8".... ![]() or stop making 4 big door grocery getters with v8s in them... ![]() best idea.... MAKE the 'engineers' WORK on what they design !! ![]() Chevy makes/made a concentric throwout bearing clutch gizmo.. you need to remove tranny to replace the grr, leaky, slave cylinder hmm, didn't someone put the starter INSIDE the engine ??

There really not to bad if you've got a hoist most are pretty much impossible to get from the top.but you also not changing every 20k like the older cars usually not even recommended till 100k.I pulled the factory plugs out of my wife's van first time at 200k. I finally started misfiring and I had to bite the bullet put it on the hoist remove the front tires and inner fender well to swap plugs and wires. My daughters van an oil change you had to remove the right front tire and inner fender well unless I took to work on the hoist then it was a 5 minute job.
