Take inspection cover off underneath. Find your marks first and clean up with brake Kleen or whatever you want. Find and mark the “F” which is the fire mark. Check your point setting first. Make sure it is .020 as called for in the manual as that does affect timing. Hook up your timing light. Start engine and run at 3/4 or full throttle. Set your timing. That “F” mark needs to be right at the bottom in middle of inspection hole. There is an alignment arrow on housing in middle. You will see it if you clean everything well.

You will need 6V timing light if it is still 6V system. Those are not always available now. I have a golden oldie that does 6 and 12 both just like the operator. Lol. I think that “F” mark is 30 degrees but not sure of that. Some one can clarify but just set it to the fire mark. 😀

Dana I forgot to mention. You may find two complete sets of marks on the flywheel. Clean them both if you want. Only the correct one will show with your timing light. Other one is for timing it from the top maybe on a stationary engine. WD45 has no access from top. Mine has two sets of marks. They are 180 degrees apart. Thx.

I thought there was a TDC as well as FIRE mark. 30 deg stock. If high compression pistons you need to back off some. M&W's needed about 25 deg. That timing mark will likely move around some when running. Look for an average position. Maybe it's my distributor shaft LOL.

Yes Steve. TDC is marked as well. What would the compression ratio be if you had M&W pistons Steve?
