Smoked since was 12 years old when Manual delivery Cig machines were EVERY where, Dad and older brothers smoked, Aunt and Uncles, Grands on Dad's side smoked so just came as a desire.  Got to garage work after US of Army, was smoking 1-2 packs a day in service(Boredom) then nervous or habitual would just have a constant lit one in my face where got up to as much as FIVE packs a day some times(LONG Days of 12, 14, 16 active hours).  While scrapping always had a lit one on a lip.

Got to 1996, had quit cold twice prior for up to three months and just had enough of the stinking habit, not looked back, no nicotine gum, patches NOTHING but walked away.  Still get the urge to light up, EVERY morning when get up and any time happened to be drinking with buds, not fell back yet.  Drink I quit at 25 when awoke one morning as my Chevy pickup ran out of gas on the first tank(1979 C20), swapped tanks, had gas in the other one and got it running then tried to figure out WHERE I was.  Turned out I had left a party ADMITTEDLY intoxicated, had consumed some 3/4 bottle of JD and half a 12 pack of Busch Beer(Boilermakers), drove from a friends house in Florissant MO to LA MO(Lower Arnold) and was parked in a shopping plaza.  Did NOT, still DO NOT remember the drive even as NO Damage on my pickup.  Was about this time of year and at a Xmas Party.  Checked with a friend in MoSHP and NO reports of accidents on the route would have had to have taken so Swore OFF the booze.  I have adjusted as age came on, CAN have ONE beer and be satisfied or with wife or friends ONE mixed drink or a stiff shot of Bourbon neat or on the rocks, even go to wineries and sample or small GLASS of wine with dinner, need no more than the enjoyment of flavors not the swilling these days.  Bottle of Jack or Buffalo trace ANY of the whiskeys I have collected will last for MONTHS save when have friends or family over and KNOW they will stay the night or get a hotel close by, I still know how to stop at ONE.

I quit them DANGED ceegarettes in 1978 with a program called SMOKE-ENDERS paid for by the company I worked for back then. The thing that stuck with me was the instructor told us when you stop smokin,,your lungs will start healing themselves within ONE WEEK!! That right there is what kept me from "trying just one more puff".

It's the 2nd drink that gets you hooked , so avoiding the first one is the hard part each day .
about 30 years back I snow plowed out a neighbor who's drive had drifted shut , long drive over 1/4 mile and drifted in , took me a couple hours to get open .
Day later he stopped over and brought me a bottle of Chevrs Regal 12 year old Scotch , said I will break that seal one of these days - when things get so bad or so good it calls for celebration or drowning - still on the shelf .
For myself guess a choice where I will on a occasion have something - but even before making that choice it's one , no matter what or where and it's hard but that's all.

It's great you have chosen a path and stayed on it . may that journey continue and be part of each days blessings .

Faith isn't a jump in the dark. It is a walk in the light. Faith is not guessing; it is knowing something.

Congratulations!  That stuff can be the downfall of a fellow pretty easily, glad you quit when you could.  I do have to question the math tho, if you quit 25 years ago and you're 39 now, either you started pretty young or you're pulling our leg.  Whichever, no problem, glad you are still on the wagon.

Thad, here is a link to the website: RU Recovery  It is based out of Rockford, Ill. If you don't find a chapter close by let me know and I will make a few calls and see what I can find. Our little program just got started on Feb 14th of this year but even with the Covid interruption we are slowly growing.

Thad, that is really great.  I hope that wasn't as bad as quitting smoking as far as weight gain goes!  I'm 31 years without a smoke and gained aver 200 pounds.  Food tastes so much better!Big smile

Keep working at that.  There ain't no reason acceptable for either one of us to go back!

Congratulations Thad, a great way to live, I have not found it necessary or desirable to use MAC since July of 1978.  I also owned and operated an out-patient alcohol and drug program for 20 years , having sold it 2000.  I am sure I wouldn't still be around if I hadn't changed my ways and I am sure my wife of 54 years would have been long gone.
