I stumbled upon this interesting patent by John Deere in the 1980s showing a combine with a "down front" cylinder. It has an open concave like an L/M, but uses augers instead of raddle chains. The document reveals the need for greater capacity beyond what a traditional cylinder arrangement could offer, and this was the best option to gain separator capacity, simply lengthening the walkers wouldn't be as efficient. Further down in the background they cite Allis-Chalmers as an example where this threshing arrangement was already in use.

Been there, tried that, still searching ![]() As to how I found the patent, I was actually searching for a cross section diagram for an L/M series Gleaner, and this showed up in the results. I thought it looked oddly familiar.

JD likes to let others do R&D then copy it. They always said a rotor was too inefficient till they built theirs.

No one ever fought with JD over any combine patents because no one wanted a drill as part of their combine.

Steve, I agree with you, it's something that's always in the back of my mind. My plan was always to find the one and settle soon after finishing school, but even at my age (22) there's a lot of leftovers, especially ones that don't want to calm down and quit "sampling around". College was in interesting place, to put it one way.
Victoryallis...I read that passage, I've seen it before, but it's been a while...indeed there is a time for everything, and I try to always remind myself of that and not try to rush God. I will make a separate post about harvest, I typed it here then realized it was getting to be pretty long.

Deere is the leader in trademark #'s . They market a "Syncro-Shuttle" tractor. It is not a shuttle. It has a synchronized reverse. BUT they trademarked the name a thus can set the definition - "a device used to reverse direction by means of a synchronized gear shift". We lost a sale to one of these. When we pointed out that he really didn't compare apples to apples - he went back to Deere demanding a real shuttle - they said sure - $4,500 - ............ he is driving the synchronized reverse .... beware .... Deere holds thousands of trademarks, not to be confused with patents..
