Are the power directors in Allis tractors  similar to the torque amplifiers in IH tractors ? I realize the ta's don't have a neutral position, but otherwise do they do the same function ?
Seems like the ta's get repaired/replaced/"locked-up" somewhat often .

Nothing a like. PD IS two sets of wet clutches with gear reduction ahead of them.
TA is a planetary with a spray clutch.        MACK

Power directors were far more reliable than the TAs!

TA = TroubleAhead. If a Torque Amplifier isn't broke, it soon will be. Many TAs will coast downhill. A Power-Director is a positive drive in both ranges.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

There was a reason for the saying "every time you throw the T/A handle, put a dollar in a coffee can cuz yer gonna need it to fix it sooner than later".
Still plenty of them in use, albeit locked in low so the tractor can still be used without the major expense for tear down/rebuild.
Have known some to still run hard for years after locking them in low side, after they had them rebuilt once or twice.

Agreed. While in college, the Farmer I helped during spring plantings had only one thing to say about his IH 806 on the disk, “Put it in gear & LEAVE the TA alone!”

Technically, that’s two things :)
AC’s PD took punishment- ie roto baler!

That brings up another question, were the WD/D series a "wet" or "dry" clutch set-up (P/D) ??
Mack made a statement about "wet clutches",  but I assumed this was for the "hundred" series ??

Really? Apparently you haven't read any post in the past about WD Through D series hand clutches. The answer is there.

WD & WD45 had a “2 clutch power control” (foot & hand clutches). The foot clutch operated an engine dry clutch that engaged/disengaged everthing(trans/pto/hydraulics). Their hand controlled clutch ran in oil & only engaged/disengaged trans, allowing pto& hydraulics to continue operation.
The D series’ had a similar setup except it’s hand operated clutch became the 2 speed “power director” (high & low “stick PD”). It too ran in oil.
The 100 series (not 160)also carried the 2 speed PD which also ran in oil. But the 200,One-Ninety,One-Eighty, & 185 PD was hydraulically operated vs the hand “stick” control on the One-Seventy,170,175’s PD.

Thanks for your AWESOME reply Steve WinkWink !!
To 7060, a sincere thanks and we ran a WD, D 17,15,19 before the 180 and 190.
