What is the proper cap for the WD's oil sump?

Not even sure I have the right name or part here... On one of my WDs, there's like an orange plastic cap on it.


On the other WD, the one I think is correct, there's a metal piece with a tab on top.


What is this piece called and what is the correct original?

The first cap is from a wd 45.
Not sure what the second one is.
My w dhad a much taller cap. Sorry I don’t have a picture.

Top picture is correct for 1952 and newer with factory battery ignition. 1/4 turn twist releases or locks it. Second picture works the same but is aftermarket, not Allis-Chalmers. If you have a magneto, it is a push on breather type cap.

Hot dang, interesting. They're both '53 WDs (curved shifters but not -45s). I will probably leave both as is then!

The second picture looks like the hydraulic fill cap that has a dipstick on it. Maybe it was the same cap, just without the dipstick?

 On the lower picture you can tell this is a tractor built at the transition to the 45's since the mount for the sterring is a stamping not a casting like most WD's. Both curved shifters. Wow I have never seen one of those yet. So are the features inside the transmission the same as the WD45? I would assume so. Seems kind of rare and you have two! Awesome! 
Yea the top picture is a 45 type cap for the oil. Bottom one is not anything I have seen. But does reminds me of the hydraulics dipstick cover only bigger, Is that the plastic one? My guess its on the same tractor as the gas can lit brazed to the front wheel hub?????:)

We just need more pictures!

There were about 19,000 WD’s made with the newer transmission, going by memory. Not particularly rare.

I can't remember offhand but the SNs on these are about 6000 apart. Can't remember which one is newer or older at the minute though, but I'll double check next time I am out there!

Sugarmaker -- I thought the top orange one was plastic, but now I'm wondered if it's stamped sheet metal and I should pay better attention. The one with the tab on it, I don't recall having a dipstick on it (like the hydraulic fluid one). Will take them both off and double check next time I go out to make sure I am right on all points! Smile

 Its not plastic, I believe it is a zinc die casting, if I remember correct?? Some one will remind us of the material of the cap in picture #1.

I could see that. Not sure why I thought it was plastic, I probably just tapped on it. Will try to get some good pics of both for a reference this weekend. Gotta go check my game cam and see what my friendly groundhog is up to!

That is the oil filler cap, where you pour the oil into the engine.
