That’s great, glad it has a good home! Sounds like the most costly issue could be the brake if it doesn’t get addressed in time. Those are nice tractors— I have been working ours good these past few weeks, just put the bale monitor back on mine tonight. Best of luck with your new purchase!

Well Kevin we finally made it back to tractor. Had to tape the top of the fuel shut off in the pump and she fired right up. But anyways the steering worked fine. Dad drove it around a bit and tryd all the gears out. A few negatives, one of the 3pt lift ram is leaking pretty good, one of the brake pedals don't seem like it's hooked up or something and the rim looks worse then originally thought. But the deal got better. I will do a final update when we bring it home.

Back to the steering issue, check the oil level. One of ours sat all winter at a rented farm and when I went to start it, steering wheel took off. This was about 30 years ago and have never had any hydraulic issues since. I figured maybe kids were playing around on it and had air sucked in the lines. Some of the more knowledgeable ones on here can tell you what to check more accurately as it could be an issue in the future. 185’s are nice tractors.

Yep! Now imagine a turbo’d 185 on 18.4x34’s. It has a sweet sound and I don’t know how fast it goes but it’s almost scary

With the pump turned up and on 30’s, they will almost fly if wings were an option— lol. I ran my father’s 185 down the road last year and had to slow down to a late model JD. Later, the farmer asked me how fast that 185 would go. All I know is it’s a lot faster than mine!

I was thinking the same thing, never seen a 185 that did not come with 3ph but there is a first for everything, and I agree on the 30" rims, especially if you have to take it on the road. It is amazing how much faster mine is going down the highway with 30" rims verses my neighbors with 28" rims. Did not realize the difference until I drove his for him one day.

Ok we were making plans to go back an see if can get her running. I didn't see this from where I was but dad said when he was cranking it that day the steering wheel and wheels were turning. Every time he hit starter the wheels would turn, think he said to the left. I thought that sounded odd

185 is one of the best tractors AC built. If it came down to keeping just one the 6080 would have to leave. Hope that day never gets here!

4k is a great price, especially when he dropped a thousand while you were looking at it. Doesn't sound like it needs anything major, but I would get that rusty rear rim dealt with sooner as opposed to later. Rust does not get better over time. Dismount the tire, sandblast the inside of the rim and repair any rust holes, prime, paint and you will have one less thing to worry about. I would jump on that tractor! |

$4k and not pay for any repairs to sell it, would already be gone. 185 should have either or 540/1000 pto, also did not state rear or front rims sizes, OE fronts should have been 15's for 9.5 15Ls, and rears could be either 4 rail 28s or five rail thirties, sure wish I could find a set of thirties and centers for my 180. ONE 18.4/28 is as much as a pair of ANY width 30's.

Ok we went and looked. Not as nice as last time we seen it but still not bad. It's not all tour up. Sheet metal, fenders aren't rotted and are straight, the hood has a dent but not real bad, has side tins, grill shroud is good but screen is dented. Looks like a older repaint. Has one ag front and one truck tire on front, rear tires are descent with more then half tread and not cracked, one rim is good an one is showing rust that prolly by time it needs tires will need replacing. Tach shows 2500 hr. There's hyd lines to the pto drop box so that's hyd pto right. He hasn't used it in five years but starts it each year. Radiator is full an clean looking, oil looks ok. He told dad 5000 before we even looked, the battery didn't have enough umph to start it but did turn over. After that he told dad 4000. He getting older and hates seeing it sit. Should we go back with battery and run it or go back with battery and run it onto a trailer to bring home. Did I leave anything out.
Thanks for your input |

Yes, in this area there were lots of 190xt,s and 706 and 806 IH without three points, even a few 200. Then in the early 70s we started raising sunflowers and everyone want three point to cultivate, a lot of after market 3pts installed. I had a 706, put Cornhusker 3pt on, was fine for cultivating with a 6 row, maybe not so good for a plow or heavy tillage. Just sold that 706 this winter.

I bought a 185 out of an estate a few years ago,had not run for about 5 years, looked pretty good, wiring a mess, good tires all around, good rims, had a loader gave $1000 as it sat.Turns out it started up and ran good, hydraulics, power steering good, needed a muffler, did a little rewiring and a one wire alternator,2nd gear bad.Overall a good tractor for what I paid use it to load round hay bales.

I guess location makes a huge difference. In our area (northern NY State), 185's in good condition go for $3,000 - $4,000.
For me, the things I would want to check for are: ~signs of coolant in the engine oil ~excessive blow by when up to operating temperature ~rear end being over full ~transmission (gear jumper) ~hydraulics - fluid not milky, no leaks and everything works ok ~power director works as it should ~ does it have a hydraulic PTO ~tires and rims (as stated above) Good luck !!! I didn’t know that a 185 was available without 3pt? I would say another bonus for 30” rubber, 28” seems less desirable.

Most likely has 3 pt hitch, that's a plus if it does. Minus if it doesn't. Having both PTO's is a big plus if it has that option. And hydraulic PTO clutch is another big thing to pay a little more for if it has it. Darrel

When in doubt, ask the owner what he thinks it is worth and go from there. Tell him you will give it a good home and he might go easy on the price.
