Does the generator connect to the power steering? |

On my D17 diesel, the power steering pump is connected to the back of the generator, it's mounted right on it, I can't see if it was like a thru-shaft?
I think it's the power steering pump anyway, as that's what the power steering lines connect to, and I think they are the power steering lines, because when they leaked, it had no power steering. Obv. this will make a difference if I decide to fit an alternator, as it will mean I'll need one with a thru shaft, if such a thing exists? |

It's not a thru shaft. There is a small coupler that joins the two. Ryan

So the generator shaft does extend out the back of the unit, at least far enought to be coupled?

That'll make an alternator swap difficult. Guess the best thing to do is get it out and strip it down and see what's wrong, thanks.

I think that Oliver also had a power steering pump that hooked to the generator.

Agree with Bill. Just get your generator rebuilt. Problem solved.

There’s no reason that a generator that worked for fifty years cannot be repaired to the point it would last another 25-50 years.

True, but for two things. 1. It also needs an external regulator, and that's more wiring hassle. 2. I tend to let the engine work at idle a lot. But yeah, repairing is my first choice, because it's cheaper and easier, but I wanted to know how complicated it was to remove. It's a bear to steer without power steering, so I'll want to pull it off, and repair it all same day, rather than pulling it off when I feel like it and running it with a smaller belt for a while. Oh and the guy I bought it from has had it for the last fifteen years, and he said it never worked for him either. ![]() Edited by Coke - 08 Oct 2018 at 12:04pm |

All of my 15 and 17 diesels except for the IV have alternators with a power steering pump off the back it can be done but you need access to a lathe and Bridgeport machine I’ve actually thought about selling a conversion package but I don’t think it would be cost effective

Apparently Isuzu uses something similar in their modern trucks. An alternator with an external shaft.
![]() It's on the rebadged GM stuff, so you may be able to get it from your local Chevy dealer. Edited by Coke - 08 Oct 2018 at 8:59pm |

This generator set up was also used on the WD45 diesel. Problem with the generator is the armature has the long shaft and is hard to find. Also the splines on the pump coupler and armature shaft wear and sometimes break off. Remove the two bolts that hold the pump to the generator and see what you have for a coupler and shaft ends. A generator/pump assembly sold a couple months ago for more than $900.00 on eBay. I have one (untested) under my bench.
Have you found why your power steering does not work?

It was fixed before I bought it, thanks, just a leaking hose from the pump. |

I have a D17D with the generator mounted P/S pump. My generator quit working and it was the armature that failed. A local generator/starter/alternator shop found me a new aftermarket armature, but it ended up failing too. Simply by chance I saw that a 57 Chevy has a P/S pump on the generator too. I found a 57 Chevy generator and the only difference I could see is the Chevy generator is about an inch longer. I made a spacer and it's been working fine ever since. Someone had a bunch of the pump to generator shaft couplers made some time ago. I want to say it was the Norm's Toys guy that advertises in the Old Allis News, but I don't remember for sure.

Gary Agrimson makes those couplers, you could check if he has one. http://www.agrimsontool.com/
