If there is no serial number where it is supposed to be, it could have a replacement torque tube. The dealer was supposed to restamp the serial number but not everyone did. Post some pictures and I'm sure we can get the year very close.

Some people might think of that particular area of the torque housing as the flywheel housing. Your tractor definitely has has a torque housing!!
Try this site for the exact location where your number should be found.

If you want to find the year..The block could still have a date in the side of it. If you get lucky and its the original engine..that would be your year. If Its a diesel..i believe its on the rh upper center of the block. Kinda under the intake. Someone please correct me if im wrong. Gas..I really cant remember! .

Your D-17 is a 1957,58,or early 1959. The serial number is just below the air cleaner on the torque tube where the engine bolts up and the side frame bolts in. There should be a flat spot on the slope part. You may have to clean it real good because the number is stamped in.

Look at the picture Claus posted. You can clearly see the front frame rails are bolted to the torque tube, or torque housing and you can see the numbers stamped in the housing flange. If yours doesn't have numbers stamped there it must have a replacement housing. If you can find the engine number, maybe somebody could compare it to theirs and get you close.

Corbin, see where your fuel line crosses over where the back of the engine and the next big casting (torque housing) is? Looks like close to the end of your rubber hose where it is clamped on to a metal tube going to the carb. Compare that area to Claus's pic. If it has a serial #, that's where it is.

Just for the record the photo I posted was taken of my 170, the 170 numbers and the D17's are in the same place.
