Some pictures for applying the large Allis hood decal.
I had touched up the persion orange paint, and let it dry then used some fine steel wool to smooth out any bumps in the paint.

Taped the decal in the location desired (friend Bob stopped by so I put him to work):

I taped all along the top and used this as a hinge to lift the mylar so that the backing could be removed:

This was not my idea. I seen versions of this online. But I must say this worked WAY better than trying to handle and place the entire decal. This kept it in location and used gravity to let the decal in to place. Then used a plastic bondo paddle to remove most of the air. Working from the center outward. Had a couple small blisters that were poked and smoothed.

The results:

I am a happy camper! It was worth the effort to fix this. Thanks to Maple Hunter for the quick service! Thanks you folks for checking in on me too! Hope things are good in orange land!
Regards,
 Chris

Folks,
I had a large air bubble in the Allis hood decals on both sides of the tractor. Bothered me to the point I peeled the mylar decals off a couple days ago and attempted to touch up the paint under the areas that I had tried to apply some super glue. Which by the way did not work and would not be recommended to try to repair decals! I just got a new set of mylar decals from Maple Hunter! Great service!
I need to figure out what I need to do, to get the paint repaired and then come up with better technique to apply these long cumbersome decals!
Any suggestions or techniques are welcome too!
I will try to get some pictures.
Whats the worst that can happen? They looks worse than the first time and I rip them off again! Out to the shop! Rain here so good day to look at this project!

Chris

wjohn,
Man I sure hope the trip was worthwhile! I didnt have a clue we would be going two years talking about this old WD45. I look back and wonder how in the heck I made all those moves!Smile

Here is a shot from the pits at the Waterford PA Farm stock tractor pulls Saturday. They had 90 hooks yesterday, with some real smokin hot out of control diesel tractors in the other lane! Way too much for me!

After many lunch breaks of getting through half a page at a time I have finally read through the entire thread! Thanks so much for documenting everything. It's helpful to see how everyone tackles different challenges in these tractors.

Folks,
Adjusted WD45 hitch up (20 inches) and tighter to axle for farm stock no rulles pull today. Better track conditions. The WD45 stood up at 136 feet. I wasn't going to be front page news so popped the hand clutch in to stop my vertical climb. Maybe was 8 out of 12 pullers? Still learning! Defiantly had traction today! Was a good day!

Folks,
Spartansburgh antigue tractor pulls last night. WD45 weighed in at 4040 lbs. Track was hard packed. I took the right side and didn't have much bite. I spun out at 180 feet not at full throttle in 1st gear. Good stout tractors were pulling 50 plus feet farther. But we looked good! So there you go!

Off to Waterford fair Farm Stock 4000 lb class today at noon. At little hitch adjustment and shazzam! No rules on this pull, so pretty much just a donation, but we will be there! Some old farts in the stands just dream about it, we do it! Raining drizzel.

Regards,
 Chris

Frank, Folks,
Thanks! We get a lot of compliments on the tractors. But like they say paint dont pull! Nic was out paced by a Allis WD that may be a 45 or at least a 45 engine that had old rubber and was running rather ragged but did the job! Yea I would like to get Nics tractor upgraded to a 45 engine.

Nic sent me this picture of his son Cooper (our great grandson) on his great great grandfathers tractor. He looks ready to go to work with the old WD!

Tomorrow night we will be at Spartansburg PA fair. I will take the WD45 and keep hitting at it! About the same tough tractors. No hang on weights unless from the factory, will be at 4000 lb.

Next week we will have three tractor pulls at our local home town Albion PA fair. Friday the 13th will be 3500 and 5000 lb classes on the cement with a stone boat. (Would like to do a stone boat on dirt track!)
Then Friday evening it will be a Farm stock pull. Saturday will be the antique tractor pulls.
Will be a busy week at the fair!

Also just broke ground tonight for new kids pedal tractor pulling track at the Pioneer Steam and Gas Engine Society grounds.  (Sagertown PA) It will be 5 ft x 40 feet. Light broom finish. 4 inches of concrete on top of 2 inches of foam. Rhett and Cooper will be using this to get started pulling!

Regards,
 Chris

Chris,
You both have extremely nice looking machines!

It sounds like you have a near perfect balance. What pressure where you running? I hope that green machine was a Oliver :) Nic could use a little longer stroke in his, maybe?

It sounds like a really great event. I wish I had the ability to pull more than twice a year :(

Great pictures, as always!

Folks,
Frank, I your tractor herd is of good size. My wife doesn't like me playing with this old iron much, but tolerates it and me!

Last night the Allis tractors did not do well at the local pulls. Both of our trtactor preformed well and did everything they could. Grandson Nic pulled his WD in the 3500 lb class and ended up in the middle of 14 pullers. Track was good enough that he ran out of power.

Sorry for the old cell phone picture quality of Nic pulling:

I took the new toy (WD45) in the 4000 lb class and didnt do any better: I spun out near the left side of the track.

Track was sticky in center and dry on the left. Most tractors pulled towards the left and required some brake work to stay in bounds. The front of the 45 came up maybe 8 inches at the most and only required me to lean up towards the steering wheel to bring it back down. I had the option as first puller to re hook I thought I had a good pull so kept the distance 305 feet. Winner was at the 340 foot mark on a nice old green machine. Lots of good strong competition, most were getting the power to the ground well too!

We both had a good time, and it was a good cool night under the lights in Waterford PA.

Didnt bust anything, tractors drove on the trailers, no plastic to polish, got to visit with a lot of pullers/ friends, and we looked darn good going down the track!Smile

Thanks for checking on me! Yea I know it should be in the pulling portion of the forum!
Regards,
 Chris

There are no truer words Smile

I've only got 10 tractors, 6 Fords (1 is a parts tractor), 2 Fergusons, a Oliver and my beloved D17. 3 or 4 will go down the road but, I won't stop until I get a Case D and a CA.

My wife is understanding and enables my addiction, as well as helps me work on them, if I need help. I'll be 75 in 3 months and it also helps keep me from feeling it.

Frank, Folks,
Yes I can see how the pulling thing could get addictive! Just a little farther a little faster!!
I saw a WD advertised in Ohio that would be real nice to make into a pulling tractor! Cheryl says that's enough! She is probably correct? I do have a tractor problem!

Thank you, Chris. It was my first pull and I have a lot to learn and even more to apply to the tractors. I've asked a few questions on this forum and learn from them and I had help offered w/o asking, too. I thank all that have helped!

Pottsville is only 30 miles from me but, the next Closest is 180 mi. so, I can only take one to that.

Tractor pulls are fairly rare in my, general area but, truck pulls are fairly common?

I went to the Grants Pass fair, over the weekend and they had a truck pull. A LOT of trucks but, no tractors with the exception of a, exhibition, supercharged, three BBC engined tractor. 350 ft+ at 38 mph and 2 wheelies!

Chris,
I only have two pulls, within driving distance, for the year and I could only make it to the first one Cry

I got 2nd with my 850 Ford and 3rd with the D17. The 850 is 150 lb light (5000 class) and the D17, is 200 light (6000 class). The biggest problem, with the D17, is the tires. A wore out R4, on the left and a nearly new Goodyear, 45* on the right, both 16.9's. That will be corrected next year and I'll run both pulls.

My tractors are, truly stock, at least for now Wink

Yea that set of rules would fit that tractor better.  IMO! Also run at any rpm you want with no governor would need to be included in the rules too!Wink I dont want to go there. We have a lot of stock antique pulls in the area for antique tractors. Most of the pulls have enough staff to help check tractors as they come across the scales.

Frank,
You are very observant. Seems the owner missed those details and a few others for the antique pulls. But with no rules and no one checking tractors, anything goes. He ended up in second place after 6 tractors had a pull off for going over 250 feet. I seen this tractor /driver go way out of normal safety issues in my book, on a power track. Would be interesting to know the power producing features?Smile

In hind site I learned a lot. With my weights as I have them now and a soft track I can use that longer hitch and still have a decent pull with a stock short tired Allis tractor. There are still a lot of stock tractors out there that are really tough competition too.

I left my tractor at the fair grounds on display for the week, will pick it up next weekend.

Folks,
Couple pictures at the tractor pull today. Track is very sandy/ loose material. I had extended the hitch and the WD45 front end still stayed down in good order. I choose to pull in low gear. Pulled 207 feet and was out done by 7 other tractors. About normal at this pull as there was no speed limit, no tire size restrictions, no RPM restrictions. So there were some tractors that to me didnt sound and or act like Antique Tractors. Two in my class at 4500 LB looked to be stock. I weighed 4530 lb. so that checked out OK.
Here is my WD45 There were about 14 or 16 folks in my class:

Here is one of the 4500 lb competitors with a similar Allis tractor

And as he pulled it out the gate somewhere at 300 + feet? Looked like he was in 3rd gear, and still spinning the tires. (Just wound a little tighter than my old WD45!) I noted several somewhat unusual "stock" items. He had plenty of power in the engine that's for sure.

Had a good time and did not break anything! My tractor did everything I expected. So I was pleased!
Regards,
 Chris
