I have been kicking around the idea of getting a ford power master project tractor for a bit now and finally ask the wife about it yesterday.  next thing I know I woke up on the floor with a bloody nose, black eye and a knot on my head !!  geaze, a simple know would suffice!!! In all fairness to my wife, I have a seizure disorder and I think I had a seizure, but I guess I'll never really know... BTW: this is a true story

dt, tell us exactly what is wrong with the 8N if it is used as the 20 hp tractor that it is please. obviously one should not compare it to kinda modern day tractors since the last one made was in 52 I think.

my mistake, what I meant was after MY 8n. There are folks that love em. mine was just simply not reliable and didn't have the power I needed, it was also to light for the work. The brake pedals pushing down didn't do it for me either, I kept getting my foot stuck between the pedals. when I need a tractor I want to jump on it and go. my wd45 wasn't much newer than the 8n and I could let it sit for months run out fire it up and start working it. That wasn't meant to blast all 8n's/fords, just a bad experience with mine. regardless of vehicle type, if I have a bad experiance on one, I tend to be more leary next time.

The best time to ask the wife if you can get a new project is after it's unloaded.... It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission....

REALLY . Why would you have to ask at ALL !!!!!. A guy had his wife along one day when he stopped by MY Shop to get repair work done ,he ask what's in the other building over there .So I showed him, he said my wife has to see this. He went out and ask her in to the Showroom. She looked around and then said are u married ,I said yes , she said if I was married to her she would kill me for having this much stuff. I smiled and said with a attitude like that you would not be married to me. WE talked a little and she went back out to the car. After she went out to car ,he started to laugh and said ,I am glad u said that and not me .

I have a Ford 960. If it wasn't a family tractor I would have taken it out back years ago and put it out of its misery (and mine). That thing is the most gutless and expensive tractor on my place. All it does now is tug equipment around and run a bush hog since it has independent PTO. Adam

I had an 8N for a few years about 40 years ago. It was too light to move snow with a blade on the rear, it was too light to pull its standard plow and the "safety" three point hitch lifted the rear wheels to prevent it pulling too hard. Its PTO was hard connected to the secondary shaft in the transmission so with a rotary mower on the PTO it was impossible to stop moving forward quickly. Fortunately mine had a front bumper that absorbed the impact with stuff the one time I used it with a brush hog type mower. It was the epitome of tractors needing an overrunning clutch on the PTO. The 8N was better than the 9N and 2N in the steering. The 9N and 2N used a beveled pinion on the steering wheel shaft and a pair of larger diameter beveled ring gears connected to the two steering arms. Without a worm gear in the steering system, a front wheel hitting a clod or furrow kicked the driver very hard. The 8N used a ball worm that didn't kick in that situation. The 8N also had one more forward gear in the transmission. The last year of 8N changed from the obnoxious front mount distributor (copied from the '36 Ford V-8 car engine) to a side mount distributor that was a ton easier to work on. The front mount distributor was driven by the end of the cam shaft without gears so was a simple design. I was very happy to see the 8N leave at a price that paid for my purchase price and all the repairs and new tires I had put on it. When I bought the farm, I bought a MF-135 about the same dimensions as the 8N, but nearly twice the horsepower, twice the weight, power steering, and independent PTO. I plowed and planted some 23 acres for about a decade before I added a HD 4020 for greater crop clearance for row crop cultivation and spraying. Its gas and uses moe fuel per year than the 135, but I was able to plant with the 135 and went notill so I didn't stir the dirt nearly so much. Gerald J.

been checked for the seizures, take some pills and for the most part got em under control. just the odd one here and there. The ford in question is a 861 diesel. The wife is pretty understanding my farm projects, she used to get mad when I'd go up to a friends she hated when we went to the equipment shed, I'd always drag something home. I would stay away from Ford 4-cy diesels based on my experience. The 4-cy was a great gas engine and a crappy diesel, whereas the 3-cy diesels were great but the 3-cy gas was not so great.

Fred, your brought back a memory to me. A former senator from the great state of Iowa once told me he got into it with a lady senator on the floor at the state house. She got so mad she told him," If you were my husband, I'd poison your corn flakes". He said," If you were my wife, I'd eat them".  | ||

But back to the Ford's, when the guys shoehorn in a flat head V8 into a 8N, I think that is pretty cool. I would love to see a Lincoln V12 in one.

Maybe check with your wife if it would be ok if you bought a Case tractor with the Case-o-matic transmission.  If you wake up on the floor with a black eye and a broken jaw then you don't have a medical condition, you just have a wife with a severe case of better judgement.

I read somewhere that 25% of all Ford tractors ever built are still in the fields today...the other 25% made it back to the shed.

Is the case-o-matic trans any good, a friend has a 930? with case o matic drive, he broke the shifter trying to get that beast into gear. he would warm it up for 30 mins or more and still grinded getting into gear.
