What part of the country are they used and/or what soil types are they used in ?

I have one for my WD45 here in EC Indiana. I would say they have a place in clay soils because clay will tend to stay as a slab and not fall through the slats. Grandpa always said that it did pull at least somewhat easier.

Hey neighbor! Henry County here (grew up in Mt summit).
I thought our plow did OK, but maybe that was because I didn't try a slatted plow in our soils. I pulled what we had. A 2 bottom behind the wd.

Many of the AC plows here in Central VA with red clay ground were slat bottom.

Slat bottom plows were used mostly in high organic matter soils such as muck, because scouring was a problem with conventional moldboards.

They were used around here in the Mississippi river bottom there is a lot of "black gumbo" soil

They were mainly used is hard to scour soils. sticky muck or clay that would stick or ballup on a standard molboard would flow over a slat molboard. I see them around northern IN here sometimes. hard to find slats for if you need them. Funny thing is that I see far more Allis slat bottoms then other colors. Maybe it's just because I look at orange faster.

In east-central Illinois the slat bottom plows are rarely seen. I don't remember Dad ever having one at our dealership, either new or on a trade-in. My perception was they were used with primarily clay type soils, but I could be wrong.

Here in central Ky. if you want to plow with an AC plow it about has to be slat bottoms. However other brands like Ford,IH,Deere always seem to scour pretty good. The theory with slats is by removing part of the moldboard,the remaining part(the slats) will have more soil contact pressure and will result in better scouring. I do believe AC solid moldboards were the worst for not scouring,at least around here. Bought a new 2000 monoframe plow back in their day with 387 bottoms and my dealer assured me they would scour or he would make it right. After 1 season and countless trips to the field by the dealer he admitted the only thing that would make them scour was to change them over to slat bottoms. He ordered 4 new 394 slat bottoms and after that it was the best plow I ever had. Oh!! and by the way the charge for the new slat bottoms was "0". I never forgot that and bought a lot more stuff from him over the years.

I still have a Massey-Harris 3-14 --3 point hitch plow with slat bottoms, and in heavy ground it didnt take long for it to shine. thanks; ac fleet

According to history lessons slat bottom plows were invented by several enterprising farmers before any of the manufacturers started to make them.

That makes sense I've just never heard the term in context of a plow. Our keverneland always shines up quickly no matter what soil type were in.

Every spring I take the angle grinder and 'polish' the plow real purdy. I don't have 100 acres to let Mother Nature clean it up, just 10 passes of 250' each. I learned when I prepolish the plow ,EVERY foot of the wife's garden is perfectly plowed, first to last.

On the old stuff I run, I usually clean with a wire cup wheel, on an angle grinder, then paint with plow coat (a wax based coating), in the fall...

There must have been lots of slat bottom plows sold in this area because I still see a few at auctions as usually it's an Allis. I've never seen a Monoframe slat bottom though and there still are a fair number of Monoframes around.

Lots of allis slat bottom plows around here. I own a 4-16 slat bottom monoframe and have a buddy who has a 6-16 slat bottom monoframe that I'm trying to get him to sell me.
