Has anyone ever bought an empty acetylene tank? I bought acetylene and oxygen a few months ago because mine were both near empty. Went to use them today to heat the eccentrics from my D14 and the gas regulator is on 0. The oxygen is on 2000. I just hope the dealer believes me that it must have been empty when I got it or leaked since then. Anyone else ever have trouble like this? It was over $100 for both refills.

I've always had good luck with mine, but I always test them when I get them by quickly opening and shutting the valves a little bit.

has happened to me before and they made it good no problem. Pissed me off bad cause i had 35 min x2 trip to go get the new tank.
if you are just using the torch for heating use propane (with oxygen) lots cheaper. steal the tank from your grill and tell the wife you ran out.if i remember right its the same regulator also. propane no good for welding though.

With propane, should I Use the same pressures and rosebud as with acetylene?

For heating I usually run 8 psi acetylene and 30 psi O2

Once years ago I noticed as soon as I got home that I picked up an empty and I promptly called the supplier. They made it right but as another said it was another trip back to town.

You may need slightly higher psi,try around 11 if 8 isnt enough. Yes you can use the same rosebud. if you do alot of cutting get a tip from your tank supplier/weld shop dealer to cut better w/propane, (only needed on really thick steel).

about twenty five years ago out on a service call i ran out packed up my service rig whent two hours one way got acy. whent back out to find out the tank was empty so packed back up and got to the nearest phone all pissed off calledthe welder store and they ran me out another bottle and didnt charge for any of the acy, but they never go unchecked now before any gas leaves the store

if you use propane for cutting, you'll have to change the cutting tip. should be o-k with the rosebud using either

Propane is all I've used for the last 30 yrs. and it's been alright. It doesn't cut quite as clean, but it could be just me because my hands aren't as steady as they used to be. I've heated some pretty heavy stuff with the rosebud. Just a little slower is all.

Had that happen to me with oxygen. Took it back and they replaced it with no problem. Lucked out I guess.

I've also had it happen. Basically for me it was a valve on the tank that wouldn't seal. I told them I'd only used it a few minutes in 3 days and it was gone, they swapped it out just fine.

I started usin Propane a couple of years ago and am very satisfied as I re-fill the small bottle from the big house tank, with my special "Shameless thief hose",,,,,,,, I did have to buy a special tip for propane and was less than $10. I can't tell the difference from usin acytylene and LOTS cheaper,,,,er thrifty,,,,,,

5700 versus 5100 degrees F propane is just a little cooler but the heat is mostly in the outer cone

When I was in the fertilizer business we were working on a mixing system and ran out of oxygen. I sent a guy to get a full Tank in the other room and told him to get one from the full side where we we stored them. We kept a couple extra to save time in the busy season. So he was taking a while to come back and I went to check on him. He was picking the tanks up trying to see which one was full. We got a kick out of that.

Well I went to the shop at 7AM this morning. Had to buy a new tank. About two months ago after completing a job I noticed both were low, Took them in and exchanged them. Haven't needed to use them until last night. They said it was to long ago. Spent another $63 on acetylene. Lesson learned. CHECK THE TANKS AS SOON AS YOU GET THEM. The new one is an AC3 and has 200psi. I thought it was suppose to be around 300 but they said 200. After I got home I hooked up the propane tank to the torch and heated the eccentrics. Finally got the results I wanted. You can see the new bolt that I used to pound the pins out, it has mushroomed pretty good. Dipped the hot pins in a gallon of old transmission oil and painted the holes on the eccentrics with the oil to prevent rusting. I will sandblast them hopefully later today. Thanks for all the help. Especially the one about using propane!!

ARAS When you pull the feather back to a neutal flame on acy it is 6900 and when you get a new tank crack the valve because it may let liquid out.When liquid stops cut valve off . It is worse in hot weather.

I use propane for cutting and brazing - I did buy propane tips for cutting torch and a propane rosebud as mixing orifices are a little different . Son has a tank of MAPP for his table torch and if something needs more heat that works with acc tips . just have not done much torch work - have 4 bottles for acc but have not filled in a long time - as i own them I had last one filled at a different supplier than the name on tank ring . Same as welding gas have several bottles for tri-gas and straight argon . also several 312 /322 oxygen bottles - over the years seems I have ended up with extra bottles and have used several suppliers but keep my bottles rather than exchange them - just have mine filled .
