congrats on the "new" D17, Chris A '58 D17D was our main tractor for 10 yrs; hard to believe now. This will be a good chore tractor for you. NOW would be a good time to soak those clamps and locks on the wheels. Kroil or PB Blaster Penetrant work well, as does 50/50 lacquer thinner-ATF

Ouch! Glad it wasn't any worse than a hard-to-see bend. Glad you got her running - and proved once again that engines won't run on water!!

Folks,
My daughter called and said the the D17 would not start. Said it started ran for 30 seconds and quit. Jumped in the truck with battery charger. Stopped at gas station and got some fuel. (noted that they were filling the big underground gas tanks at the time). Got to the tractor and it would pop once and then nothing. Gas gage show empty. Visual look in tank showed it was very low too. Dumped in about 8 gallons of gas. Still would not fire. Seen a drop of fuel coming out of the carb. Assumed flooded. It has a zenith carb. No drain. Screwed out the main jet and allowed the carb to drain. plenty of fuel flow, so not starved or plugged from tank to carb. Looked at the sediment bowl and it was cloudy. Loosened and removed glass bowl and let it flow. Gas still looked cloudy. Assumed water in tank from setting outside for a long time in hot humid conditions, and or water from the gas station? Drained the sediment bowl several times. Actually got water in bottom of glass bowl again about 1/2 inch deep. Dumped that gas and let flow longer. Then I thought it might not have spark. Took right side hood off and set against the rear tire. I knew better than doing this! Played with the points till I got spark. Back to the gas and drained more cloudy gas. Tried it again. Drained the carb again. Tractors finally fired up, sputtered and ran with choke out a little. Told the daughter to pull it ahead. She did! Then stopped in about 4 feet. Said, "Dad the hood"! Yep ran over the back latch corner. Luckily she stopped in time and did minimal damage to the hood panel. My fault not her's. Bent the corner back to near shape and installed it back on the tractor. Fit a little tight but latched up and will be straightened better at another time. Wouyld be hard to tell it was damaged. Made me mad at myself! Moral of the story: Take a little more time and get things back together before making the next moves. Or set the hood panels out of the way. I believe the culprit, behind this little adventure, was for sure water in the fuel. Sorry no pictures!:) Regards, Chris |

Brian,
Thanks that's a good suggestion. The 3/8 studs are not as heavy duty and 1/2 would be. Regards, Chris

Chris, I would like to make a suggestion for one little modification to your top link bracket. You will notice that just below where the bracket makes a 90 deg. bend down for bolting to the holes formerly used for the PTO guard, there is a nice heavy flat "boss" cast into the housing. This is a good place to drill and tap for at least one 1/2" bolt so as to provide more strength right where there is a lot of stress on the bracket as implements are lifted. The 3PH built by the prior owner of my D-17 placed two 3/8" bolts there. I retapped them to 1/2" and reinforced the bracket. In your case, the "pin stands" on the bracket appear to be in the way of easily placing two bolts there. On second thought, simply redrilling and tapping the existing holes to 1/2" might work as well. The D17 has been setting out at my daughters. I thought I better stop and see if it would start. Also some shots of the 3 point: She fired right up! |

Tom, Folks,
Great story on you family 17. Wish we would have had one on the farm too. It would have been a good work horse. This early D17 has the wrong decals and the wrong color grill and wheels. But it has been the best of the used tractors I have brought home. It just works good and has had no major issues! I plan to do some brusk hogging with it this spring, so having this 3 point on it will work out just right! Also would like to try to have a club plow days this spring. Not sure if I would take this or the 45 with the snap coupler 3 bottoms. Another dream!:) Regards, Chris

It looks exactly like the 1 dad bought new with a 17 mounted picker it the the fall at 1959. It was a hold over from the previous year. I grew up on that old gal, baled 10's of thousands of small round bales with it. Dad ordered a wide front to go under it. As soon as we were done picking usually around Thanksgiving the handyman jack came out and we put the wide front end under her. Dad's had over 30000 hours on it when an old boy came around and wanted to buy it. Dad was in his 80's and he sold it to him. I saw it 2 years ago and it looks better that the day dad bought it new. You do have a keeper there. Have fun with her.

Folks,
The D17 has been setting out at my daughters. I thought I better stop and see if it would start. Also some shots of the 3 point: She fired right up! I also noted the location of the stop screw on the governor cover. This is out about 3/16 to 1/4 inch further that the WZ engine. I think I may be able to get some additional rpms from the old WZ? Just need to get a device to check RPM, which I have been procrastinating on. Regards, Chris

Big enough that I'm not doing it by hand! When done planting looking at 200 trees or so. The one I want is 3ph. https://agrimist.com/agrimist-d-6-150-grand-island/ On the tank, when I got the tractor 15 yrs ago I had the rusty tank cut open, blasted and coated. Didnt last. The fella who just redid mine said the coating product used probably couldnt handle the ethanol. I then took it to a body shop to get purdied up. Waiting on it. Spent 4 hr with buddy trying to extract the sheared bolt that holds the front and back strap on. Holy cow! Ended up having to drill it out... Nothing is ever easy. |

Tom,
You must have a big orchard? What is your tank issue? I had to do repairs on this one and several WD series tractors also. Most were leaking around the bracket tack welded on the bottom. I would recommend brazing around the bracket when the tank is gas fume free!m I had to solder this D17 tank because someone prior had tried to solder it already. Took me two trys! I really like having the three point on the old D17 VS the snap coupler. I dropped the carry-all and hooked up the snow blade in short order! This will be a back up tractor in case my daughter or I need it when winter sets in. Regards, Chris

Thanks. Im in no hurry; I have a priority list and the NF isnt at the top yet. My top of the list is to get the D17 operational again, (tank rework) a loader on the D17, then a 3ph, then a fruit tree sprayer on it.

Tom,
Good luck with your hunt for the NFE D17! I like mine. But I like wide fronts also. Guess the narrows fit more into the antique pulling scene, which I partake in several times per year. I enjoy working with this D17. It handles jobs well, the controls are comfortable, and seating and steering is good. I have learned to move the seat back when ever I get off. Makes getting the old right leg over the tranny easier. Regards, Chris

I got a black bar '59 WFE. Years ago I bought into the WFE is better stuff..but now, with most of my tractor work involving weaving in and out of trees, I would prefer a NF. I dont have hilly land either. I want to someday get another NF D17 so I can retire my "chore tractor" Super C my gramps bought. What did you want for that D17 anyway??

Thanks for the good tip on storing empty gas tanks! I had not thought of that. Some light oil in there would be a good idea. I enjoy sharing tidbits of orange with fellow Allis folks. Regards, Chris |

Back to your spare tank, may want to fill to verify no holes as even the top half can have them that are not easy to see.
I say this as as found pin holes on tanks that were "good" but stored for years, only to find them when put into service and surface rust cleaned out via muriatic acid. At minimum, a quart of ATF or MM Oil used to coat inside until used would go a long way towards preventing rust while setting. Enjoy your posts about keeping these old gals alive.

Folks,
Couple updates! The three little piggies are now bacon! We used the D17 and the carry all to help move some tree stands around today as we get ready for The first day of rifle season for deer. I also picked up a shorter top link from Tractor supply and it worked better with the upper bracket on the D17 top attachment. I was happy that the 17 started right up having set for several weeks! Folks,
Walnut grove and D17 resting after 2 hours of mowing down 6 foot high ragweed and goldenrod! It was a hot day too! Her pigs loved the tractor and mowing near their pen. They ran around like crazy! In summary The 3 point is going to work OK. The attachment for the top link could have been up and on top of the weldment. Regards, Chris |

Strokendiesel002,
Thanks! I have a bad or good tendency to not throw stuff away. Or if I do throw it away I drag it back out and try to make something out of nothing. A torch, welder, and 10 lb hammer and you can fix about anything! I took Jim's advice and bought a stack of 5/8 washers and shimmed the joints and also added lock nuts to all the bolts too! D17 is loaded. Will get to try it out this afternoon with the brush hog. Some of this stuff is as high as the tractor. Not sure how much I am going to wallow down? Regards, Chris |

I have an issue with your posts though... You make it all seem so easy and straightforward, that I can't believe I haven't done "this or that" yet. Then I go look for the supplies in my garage and realize I don't have nearly half of the cool extra supplies that you have gathered LOL In all seriousness I love reading your posts and watching what you have going on. Carry on good sir and thank you for sharing |

Jim, Folks,
There is a lot of free play in all the joints! Thanks for the suggestion on the spacers. It would tighten things up a bit for sure. I am going to put lock nuts on all the bolts too. Just got back from my daily 3 mile bike ride and coast! Beautiful day! FYI Cheryl say no more tractors! Found a nice WD in Ohio! Regards, Chris

If I may make a suggestion and this may be for naught, I think that I would "shim with washers" the bolts going through the upper and lower lift arm and yokes to keep the bolts from bending unexpectedly.

Folks,
Its been a while on this topic. I have had a lot of fun with the D17 since I bought it. Plowing and tractor pulling. Today the daughter said she was going to do a lot more brush hogging on her property. She has the little Jubilee now with the 5 foot Ford 951 brushhog on it. The Ford looks like crap from setting outside this year. I need to get it home and give it some attention/ clean up. So the D17 would be a good tractor for her to do some brush hogging compared to the little Ford. I needed to make or buy a top link for adding a 3 point to the 17. Here goes: Took off the seat and laid out some steel scraps: More fitting and the top link brackets in place: Burned these holes and checked size with drill: My version of the top link for a D17: Added a WD45 drawbar and the portions of the 3 point from the WD45 project: Looks like this should work OK. Will get it over to her place and hook up the brushhog. A little more horsepower and the power steering should be real handy knocking down some heavy weeds/ brush and goldenrod. Hope she doesn't cut all the goldenrod. The bees are working it hard right now. Regards, Chris Edited by Sugarmaker - 19 Aug 2019 at 9:36pm |

Is so easy to fix scaly interior rust and tiny pin holes in a gas tank isn't funny or real expensive.
I bought my 1938 Massey 101 in 1998 and it had a lot of pin holes in the bottom knew I didn't have a snow balls chance in the heat of finding a new one so started looking for options and the first place I went looking is a antique car/truck show. Those guys turned me on to a product from Gemplers called gas tank sealer. Got some lacquer thinner and a hand full of drive way stones. Sealed all the openings with duct tape and rolled those stones around for a bit let it soak for a day and did it again. Then drained the tank and allowed it to air dry. Added this stuff per directions, Next July that sealed tank will be 20 years and still holds all the gasoline I pour into it. Remainder in the can I put the lid back on turned up side down and put in a cabinet in the garage. Got it out two years ago and fixed the seam leak on my ford 5000. That looks like a nice tank on the outside.
Not sure how bad your old one is, but my d15 tank split in half pretty easily. If you turn them upside down and cut inside the rolled seam, they're not too bad to weld back together. You can clean them out, hammer dents out... Now that you have 2 you can practice on the rough one.
As far as searching the forum. I find using google searches for any forum is the way to go. You have to type in: site:allischalmers.com D17 sugarmaker or any search terms. Just make sure to put in site:allischalmers.com |

Chris you are right you can't buy a new tank. You are safe to assume the same for any old tractors where they are part of the outside body line. That is why a good tank is a great score...

Ted,
Well it is kind of a spare here too, since my tank is currently functioning! But it is in good shape (better than mine), and I don't think you can buy new ones? If I never put it on it will be a good piece for the auction! Ted, There is another tank on here for sale! Regards, Chris Edited by Sugarmaker - 31 Mar 2017 at 5:10pm |
