Anybody know how the steering system on a HD16 works? the screen canister is 2' above bevel gear/steering reservoir. is there another pump that pumps fluid to screen canister?

what year and type are we talking?  HD16A, AC, D, DC, DP, 16B?  screen canister, do you mean filter?

the early models didnt have filters for the the power assist steering, later  they were mounted on the pressure side near the engine.  will be one for each side.  if you have 1 filter it may be for later model with transmission filter and pump which is located above the trans near the steering control box.

if you are on a DP or 16b i am not familiar with them.

minnpar has parts manuals online

if it works similar to my 7G the main pump at the converter or off the engine for the trans one section scavenges off the trans and sends that oil back into the screen filter case area the other section feeds the trans.

You should have a oil pump in front cover
