545 wheel loader operation

Not really a locking converter.It's a two stage and has sprag which can be know to quit holding.if fluid is up it should spin the wheels when up against a BIG tree

Grader, I am guessing that your new purchase does not "go" when you put er in gear and mash the throttle to the floor......? First thing, check the transmission fluid. Then check the shift linkage to make sure that when you move the shift lever, that you are actually engaging the transmission. There is no lever to lock up the torque converter. It is just an automatic transmission; put it in gear and put the coals to er. My 645 does have a weak transmission. It won't hardly spin a tire, but does get the jobs done for us that we need it to do. We did discover a while back that due to to the way the throttle linkage was, we wern't getting full RPM's out of the engine. When we fixed that, those few hundred RPM's made a world of difference. I'm not sure. I'll get the serial numbers tonight. The loader was dam cheap so I had to buy it being I'm an allis guy. Came with bucket and forks. I only seen the shuttle shift on the colum had forward and reverse. Where would the other forward speed be located?

There was also a small lever on the right of the seat. It was froze up. Any clue what this might be?

I started in tonight and drove it out of it's grave. Two tires were up and the other two flat as can be. It pulled rite out of it's hole in first gear. And when I say hole it's belly was in the dirt. I was stopped and shifted to second and put the throttle on the floor and it kinda lunged a little bit not much else. I realize that's just a road gear so would that be normal to not move in 2nd with two flat tires?

Well got the loader moved tonight. Was a little sketchy loading after it fell through the trailer floor that I had borrowed. That's just my luck. But needless to say it's home. I think the trans is ok. Was rolling backwards in reverse slightly and put into 1st gear and it locked up good and solid. It seemed to want to take off pretty well in 2nd while going across the yard. Trans fluid looks like it came out of the jug. Loader has sat for 13 years untouched. I would upload pics but can't figure put how from my phone.

Mine has dexron in both trans and hyd.Good thing too because it's transferring fluid

Well Darrel I honestly haven't had time to mess with it for finding mushrooms and catchin crappie. I did buy some gauges for it the other day. I wish somebody could step me through posting pics from an I phone. I did talk to a guy that was around it when it ran. Said the trans was good if you were loading hay but if you were scooping dirt that is slipped. I have not had the machine to operating temperature so it's hard telling what it may do. I'm thinking a good servicing may do some good. Should I change fluid too??? It looks as it came straight out of the jug and doesn't smell burnt either. I'm all ears what do you guys think???

I don't know what to recommend on the transmission fluid. Maybe pull the plug on it after it has been sitting for a few days, and see if any water comes out first. If you get some water, then I'd probably change the oil. I'd definitely change the engine oil. Hope someone gets you schooled on posting pictures, because I'd like to see the old girl. Darrel

I always used 30w engine oil in the transmission of my 745. You get better pressures when the transmission has enough wear that tolerances are marginal. Dexron trans. fluid gets very thin when hot and allows for more bypass and slippage. 

I was looking online for Allison rebuilders etc,.....there was a place in TX and everything they published said 15w40 engine oil in trannys.Some other member chimed in from another country and he said 15w40 was the going thing in his local.

Straight 30 might not be so good in winter weather but in summer probably don't matter.
