   I'm trying to ID this plow I picked up...  It's also missing the coulters and I'm wondering just how important they are....

	Model 82 with snap coupler hitch. But it could be a model 72 with the spring trip shanks added in the field. The adjustable width of the frame is definitely 72 or 82, the spring trip shanks were factory with the 82, but a parts book option for the 72 and 60 family plows. There is very much information in the Farm Equipment-Knowledge Base forum with the title AC Plows Parts 101 including links to plow frames and plow bottoms and coulters books. The coulters were an option and AC coulters pretty much fit any AC two digit plow frame. They do make plowing in sod a little easier and the results smoother cutting the sod with the coulter so the plow bottom doesn't have to tear the sod apart to turn the soil over. Away from sod the difference is smaller, but always present. Plow shins probably wear faster without a coulter. To identify the bottom you will have to find a part number on Frog, moldboard, share or shin if present. The landsides were nearly always the same part number for any plow bottom. Gerald J.

	As usual, Gerald has it nailed. He's the resident expert on SC plows. Around here, all moldboard plows have coulters, regardless of what you're plowing e.g. sod, cornstalks, bean stubble, hay ground, etc.
