My b farmall has been giving me fits last summer. It will run good right away. But after using it to rake hay it will start to miss and want to die. If I pull the choke it out will keep running. I've gone through the carb with no success in fixing this problem. What are you guys thinking? Coil? Bad wires getting hot and breaking down? Dad claims once in a while it's hard to start and you have to choke it a lot more then normal.
Question number two. The carb will want to flood. I've tried 2 carb kits. New float. You can hear the float in the carb when you have it off so it's not binding. Any thoughts? Can I set the float lower just a tad? |

By what you are saying about using the choke to keep it running and to start you have a classic case of not enough gas. Either the gas tank can't breath or you have a gas restriction somewhere.

The flooding sounds like neddle or seat. Take the gas line off the carb and see if fuel will flow out of there a steady stream. Either you can't get fuel from the tank or the line going into the carb is plugged up with gunk.

It runs good most of the time. But when it starts getting warm say an hour into raking hay it starts to act up

Have you checked for a crack in the carb or intake or a bad gasket? A crack could open when it get hot and let air leak in resulting in it running too lean.

Sorry, first I think you ought to check or change the condenser and same with the coil. When they get hot they can misfire or die. Leon R Cmo

The flooding im talking about is when I shut the tractor off. Not when it's running.

When you shut off the tractor the neddle and seat are not sealing. There is either a small bit of something in the seat or a scratch on the seat or neddle or just enough ware on then that they won't seal. I have one with a bad seat and I haven't been able to get it out so I just shut off the fuel when parked. If you can get a rubber tipped neddle for it that might seal up better and not leak. |

Dan.. I've gone through 2 carb kits trying to get this to stop. The original has a solid needle. The kits both have the rubber tip needles. It's driving me nuts. It can't get any cleaner. I've looked the seats over. They look good.
I'll give the coil and condenser a try thanks guys Edited by bobkyllo - 24 Mar 2016 at 10:40pm |

Do you put lead additive in gas

Have you replaced the seat that the neddle goes into? I think there should be a gasket on the back side of it. If that gasket is bad it will leak around the outside of the threads even if then neddle is sealed.

I had a Farmall Cub that did the same thing. I rebuilt the carb several times and never could get it to stop leaking when I shut it down so I just turned the fuel off under at the settling bowl. Do you have the new safety style gas cap on that old Farmall? If not you can get a free replacement from Navistar International to put on it. http://www.ihgascap.com/ Edited by VAfarmboy - 25 Mar 2016 at 4:28am |

As Dan said there is a gasket on the backside of the needle valve seat, make sure seat is tight but not over tight. Next take a Q- tip and holding it into the seat rub it between your hads and buff the seat. After that make sure the needle will slide freely in and out of the seat. Next step install float then make sure the little tab sets squarely on the bottom of needle valve when needle valve is closed. Last step you can fudge a little on the setting of the float just remember if there is not enough fuel in the bowel the engine will starve for fuel especially when going up or down hill or on side hill. Keep us posted, You can fix this!!

I also vote for changing the coil. A bad coil will have the same symptoms as a fuel problem. The coil will be fine when it is cool and then when it begins to heat up it will start to miss fire. If the coil feels hot when the tractor starts running bad then it is the coil.

BUT, if it runs better with a little choke, like he said, it's probably NOT an ignition problem. |

The choke is why I figured it is the fuel as well I am leaning toads a crack or bad manifold gasket. Maybe even stretched bolts so that once it gets hot it is getting air where it shouldn't. You could try getting it to the point where it runs bad and try spraying a small amount of starting fluid around the carb or intake if it response to the starter fluid you know it is getting sucked in through a crack.
