How did Allis Chalmers pick part numbers. Was there a system for assigning part numbers?

While I will not even start to say I am an authority on the number system, I have figured out a few things about it by having the parts # books and microfiche for parts #s.
First of all, the numbers started with 6 numbers such as 237496. After a while they ran out of numbers so all of these had a "70" added in front of them. They then started with a "71" in front of the numbers etc. I think that the last I have seen have a "74" in front of the numbers.
Now there were groups of numbers assigned to various plants. For example the early numbers (and earlier there were a combination of letters and numbers) were assigned to the West Allis plant. The Independence plant where the Gleaners were built was assigned numbers starting with "71" so if you see a number such as 71107252, it is a Gleaner part. This number I just used is a beater blade for an A and/or a R. The items produced at the LaCrosse Works started with the 3??plus 3 more numbers on the parts (later the 70 was added in front of these 3s) and went up to the 7?? area. Now what I just wrote is not totally true as the Oxnard Works plant used the 4?? first 3 numbers on their 6 digit part number. And to cloud the explanation even more, the LaPorte Works started with the
5?? first 3 numbers.
Clear as mud. Well I tried. I do know for example when I see a part number starting with 711, I know it is a Gleaner part. If it starts with a 5?? number then it is an item built at LaPorte such as an All Crop Combine and the other pieces of equipment built at LaPorte.

The addition of "7" or "70" was when the Deutz thing took place. Gleaner combine numbers always were 11 or 13, they just added a 7 in front. For example, a model 7000 tractor power shift clutch disc was a 261212 from Allis. When Deutz took over it became 70261212.

I was told once the bolts, etc. started with a 9, older tractors.

The "9" was used (from what I can tell) on boxes of items such as nuts, bolts, cotter pins, etc that came in and was used on a multitude of machines. Den

it started as U-IN THE OLD PARTS BOOKS -U-3187- THE IT WENT TO 20 WAS ADDEDAS 203I87-- 71 WASADDED TO71203187 THEN AS YOU SEE IT TYODAY FOR THE NEW SYSTEM--THERE WERE DIFFERENT NUMBERS FOR DIFFERENT TOOLS LIKE MOWERS-COMBINES -ETC. WAS TOLD BY AN OLD DEALER DONOT REMEMBER WHICH IS WHAT ANYMORE- ASK BILL LONG FOR IT HE WOULD KNOW- MY 2 CENTS

When we started in the 30's the Allis Chalmers Number System for parts was as follows:
Tractor parts started with 2 Combine Parts Started with 5 Implement parts La Crosse La Ports started with 3 Bolts Nuts Washers etc started with 9 From here on in it is a guess Oxnard parts started with 8 Cannot help with Springfield Part numbers - that is where the Crawler Tractors were made
That is the best I can remember. Now when I go to the AGCO parts book page I notice that the numbers for the old Allis Chalmers Parts start with 7 (?) then pick up the original Allis Chalmers numbers. Offhand I cannot tell how many digits the parts numbers had Hope this is some help. Good Luck! Bill Long

Deutz had some #s that was almost the same as ACs so the 70 was added to AC #s. MACK
