 Topic: Best primer?

I have seen a lot of post about which paints are best but what about primer? I'm working on my wd all-crop drill I will have all the parts sand blasted (didn't realize how many parts there are in drill until it was completely disassembled). I'm thinking self etching primer on the smaller parts and high build urathane on the larger parts to fill in some of the pits. I'm open to opinions.

I'd buy matching paint and primer. While it 'shouldn't ' matter using brand x primer and brand z paint......why take a chance? Hopefully you're only doing this ONCE, so spend a couple extra bucks now .

Self etching is old school. Use an epoxy sealer primer. If you Google what primers are best you find several paint manufactures website telling the difference between modern primers and older promers. From there you can decide what will work best epoxy or urethane.

Hey Rick,,,If you are wantin a first class original paint job on that equipment,,best thing to do is go to a local paint and body shop and ask what they use and where they buy their supplies, most different brands of paints, primers, reducers or thinners recommend different re-coat times,,,some require sanding between coats,,others don't,,,your epoxy materials are goin to be the most expensive,,but the longevity will be better,,,,, Hope this helps you,,,,

We always use a primer sealer. Keeps the top coat from dying back. Leon Cmo

Old school or not, on bare metal I always start with self etching. I tried something recently that didn't go as well as I'd like so I ended up re-stripping a small price. The paint came off about like the original paint, the self etching primer was a challenge. That stuff is tough and it bites in hard.
I should add I never paint over the self etching directly. Usually along the way there will be some filler primer used and I always end with a sealer before the paint goes down.

also... whatever primer/ paint you use
be sure the whole tractor is toasty warm! I learned the hard way ,all the cast on and IN a tractor takes DAYS to slowly warm up. ven with a couple heat lmaps and 80*F air in the garage it wasn't enough. The 'skin' of the cast was warm but not 'underneath'. Now I only paint in mid summer.
and ...wait at least 2 days before putting on the paint. Let the primer dry proper in the warm sun if possible NOT a cool garage. It'll 'bond' ,'off gas','cure' , whatever.. a whole lot better outside in the sun.

I use the epoxy primer. Always prime the pitted or visible sheet metal surfaces with it and then come back in with the Sanding/filler primer.
On the epoxy, there is a window of time that you can top coat without scuffing. I always do it that way. The info will be on the can, or it is for me.

Playfarmer- nothing wrong with self etching just going to become unavailable due to the Voc content. It works just fine but the new epoxy primers are supposed to be better. I've used both. I like urethane on sheet metal my self.
