Hi all, I'm new to this site and the Forum thing. I have a great little D-17. My question is trying to find something to replace my gas gauge float. I was told cork will not work with the ethanol in the gas, that's probably why mine sinks and coating it with something will just disintegrate off. Thanks for any help

I just use 1/2 of a float from the junked Cavaliers I've disposed of around here. Now you can buy new floats but well I'm cheap AND frugal ! I even found another complete fuel sending assembly(pump,float,etc.) today when I kinda cleaned up here,yeesh....maybe I'm a packrat ??

There is a guy in IL that sells floats for some kind of model (maybe an A ) Ford.
I
I lost his ID, but got one for the D 15.

I swear D series 4 gave me the source.

Cork will work fine if coated with SealAll. Has been working for me for decades on the float in my MF-135 that runs fine on E10.

Are you sure your float is sinking?  If it is reading empty, the most likely cause is the float riding up and down on the rod rather than staying at the end of it where it belongs.
If your float is still bad, I use new ones that are made of neoprene (will not disintegrate in gas).  There are around $4 a piece from a place called Old Standard Auto Parts - the carry stuff for Ford Model A's.  Their number is 866-654-2855866-654-2855 FREE.  Talk to Kevin there and mention part number A-9313-C.

I picked one up from Kevin last spring when I planned on taking the tank off to clean it. After removing the gauge, I placed the outside end of the "wire" on an anvil (back edge of the vise) and tapped on the swedged part to bring it back close to round. Slide the old float off along with the retaining washer and slide the new Neoprene float on. Replace the washer  and place the "wire" back on the anvil and hammer lightly till the washer can't slide off.
 After I got done, I thought " I should have taken pictures or video" Oh well hind sight is always better Big smile

Thanks everyone for the help. DSeries4 it's not sliding on the rod, when I looked in the tank it was below the gas level. Will give the neoprene a try as Minnesota requires gas to have ethanol in it. Ted J, Fergus Falls.
