I have a lot of noise in the rear end of the B I just bought. I know this a hard question but how expensive is this to fix if I have to replace all the bearings in there. just to give you all a place to start when I drained the rear end and trany all that was in there was water and very little oil.I have refilled it with a hy- tran type oil but it still makes more noise than I like, so that is why the question. I need an idea of cost before I take it a part. Thanks Dave

First git that dang hy-tran stuff out of there!!!---these tractors were made for #90--140--and 160 weight lube!! ---Trust me it usually makes them quiet down a lot!---mine did! thanks; ac fleet

Dave, The original manual for my 1950 B says 20W. If your B has hydraulics, anything heavier would be a problem. Get out all the water that you can and refill with 20W. Should be available at Tractor Supply. The fire her up, go for a spin and listen. Bob@allisdowneast

Your final drives need to be addressed. Each one should be individually drained and replace the heavier oil in these with 85W or heavier. They are served by a different lubricant than the trans & Hydraulic system compartment.

Agreed, ya gotta find the noise and also get something besides what you got in the diffy. how you isolate the noise is up to you, I have always had problems doing that.

Nothing wrong with trans-hyd.in your "B" transmission we have that in ours for 40+ years the trans.runs cooler than it did W/20w when we did a lot of plowing with it.I would say you probably have rust on the gears and bearings from the water in it.I would ck the final drives for contamination drain them and put in 80-90w use it might get better.

Do you have the same noise in all the gears? These old Bs and Cs with straight cut gears can be quite noisy even if they never had water in the transaxle.
Give the rear wheels a good shake and if something is loose you will have noise. All B final drives are not set up the same. Tell us what B finals you have and maybe we can help out. Do you have one big nut holding the wheel to the axle? Or one big nut holding a 5 stud adapter to the axle or a flanged axle with deep dish reversible wheels.

Redid my 49 B and bearings were pitted some and since I was not going to use it for field work I did not replace them .It is noisy but money was tight .

My B is a 1942 I am going to try 85/ 140 tomorrow. I am not going to use it for heavy work anymore. I hope this will cut the noise down so I can live with it. Let you know. Thanks Dave

I did change the oil in the rear end, put 85/140. It did quiet it some, but still some noise. Could some of the noise be in the drop differencals. Should I take the pans off and clean them all out or just drain them and what oil should I use. Thanks Dave

Dave,
I'd pull the pans and clean them. You really can't drain them any other way. There are no drain plugs. I use heavier oil in the final drives bull gears and a lighter oil in the tranny (30W). I own several of these tractors and some are noisier than others. I have a B that is crazy noisy in 2nd gear, but okay in the other gears. I pulled all the gears from the tranny when rebuilding and didn't notice any problem with that gear. I just drive it! If something gives, I fix it. Good luck.

Seems today that 1st gear was not noisey at all. 2nd gear is noisey. I am not going to fix it right now. I am going to change the oil in the final drives. Best to use 85 in there or what. Thanks Dave
